Quentin Tarantino is known for his signature violent, gritty, and blood-fest works. With movies like Inglorious Bastards and Pulp Fiction under his collar, the filmmaker has often spoken about his love for cinematic violence. Surprisingly, the king of such movies is also a fan of romantic comedies. In an interview, the director expressed how a Matthew McConaughey rom-com made him cry.
According to Quentin Tarantino, romantic comedies are a guilty pleasure for him. He stated that he mainly consumes rom-coms while flying in airplanes and is a huge fan of Kate Hudson. However, it was Matthew McConaughey’s Ghosts of Girlfriends Past that made him cry in the air. This information was indeed surprising for fans who find a very different approach in the director’s works.
How did Matthew McConaughey make Quentin Tarantino cry?
Due to the filmmaking style of Quentin Tarantino, he is not usually associated with light-hearted romantic flicks. This led talk show host Stephen Colbert to ask him if he watched every type of movie during an episode of Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The audience was quite surprised to know that the filmmaker watches rom-coms, even if it was only limited to his airplane trips.
If Quentin Tarantino’s words are to be believed, then Matthew McConaughey‘s 2009 flick Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is one of his most favorite rom-coms. He even confessed that the movie with Jennifer Garner made him emotional. In the movie, McConaughey is presented as a womanizer photographer.
“For instance, I was coming back on a flight, and I watched that movie with Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. In that movie, he’s like, this sexy fashion photographer, has a ton of girlfriends, he’s a real jerk.”
The Pulp Fiction director added that when the movie goes to the flashback, he was reminded of his childhood and it made him very emotional.
“Then it goes to a flashback. When they knew each other, when they were children, and they’re on a swing, and it’s snowing and at a park. She gives him a birthday gift and he opens it up, and it’s a camera, and it actually is like the exact kind of the first camera I was ever given when I was a little kid, and all of a sudden, I just start crying”

The Oscar-winning director also added to his confession that he feels highly emotional in the air. This is why he loves checking out romantic movies while flying and even calls them his guilty pleasure.
Quentin Tarantino feels emotional in the air
Even though Tarantino’s movie style is highly mature and not for the weak-hearted, his taste in movies is a bit different. He admitted that he loves to watch rom-coms occasionally as well. Praising Kate Hudson as his favorite and the “queen of the skies”, he confessed that watching a rom-com high in the air has a special feeling that makes him emotional.
“Kate Hudson is the queen of the skies, as far as I’m concerned. But there’s something about watching a rom-com on an aeroplane flight that I think there is something to the fact that, I think you become more emotional when you’re, like, three miles high in the air.”
The Death Proof actor didn’t feel shy to admit that he has often found himself crying while watching confessional movies up in the air- “I have found myself crying, literally weeping at like embarrassing confession movies.”
Quentin Tarantino considers romantic movies as his “guilty pleasure”. He is also a live example of the fact that one can feel a special love for a specific genre but there’s nothing wrong in giving a watch to other genres as well.
