Kojima took to social media to share a photograph that references a curse in the film, which is loosely based on a real incident. However, given the curse’s nature, Kojima might have lightened its effect by sharing it with everyone who follows him. As a result, netizens could not keep their cool about Kojima passing on the curse through social media.

The 2022 horror film Incantation is reportedly loosely based on a real incident in Gushan District, Kaohsiung. In 2005, a family of six claimed various Chinese deities possessed them. In the film, the possession is spread by seeing the face of an idol of the deity known as Mother Buddha.

The film sees a single mother, Li Ronan trying to save her daughter, Dodo, from the curse of the Mother Buddha. In the end, Ronan passes on the curse to everyone who watches the footage she recorded during her quest to lift the curse. However, director Kevin Ko has stated that all the elements in the film pertaining to Mother Buddha are fictional.

Although the curse is fictional, that did not stop netizens from playing along with the ideas propagated by the film. In Incantation, the curse’s effect can only be lightened by passing it on to others, something Ronan does during the climax. As a result, netizens could not stop themselves from drawing parallels between the film and Kojima’s post.

As the tweets indicate, most fans played along with the perception of the curse created by the film and joked that Kojima shared the images of the Mother Buddha idol to dilute its effects. While some X users were disturbed that Kojima would share the allegedly cursed images on social media, most were able to look at the lighter side of it.

Directed by Kevin Ko, Incantation was released on March 18, 2022. It went on to gross roughly $5.7 million at the global box office, becoming the highest-grossing Taiwanese horror film of all time. It later debuted on Netflix, where it also received praise from international viewers. Meanwhile, Kojima is currently working on a horror video game OD alongside Jordan Peele.
