After 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, Adam Wingard returned to direct Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The film starring Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, and Brian Tyree Henry saw the reunion of Godzilla and Kong, as they set aside their differences to defeat the tyrannical Skar King from destroying the surface.

Critics mostly looked down on the film as pointless monster mayhem while audiences enjoyed the fun and bombastic nature of the film. It seems Hideo Kojima sides with the latter regarding his feelings about the film as he gave a lengthy post stating his thoughts. He compared the film to the 1972 Japanese kaiju feature Godzilla vs. Gigan in terms of the fun nature of the film.

Kojima lauded the relationship between Godzilla and Kong and was touched by their evolving friendship in the film. Kojima understood the intentions of the film and admired it for what it was: a fun bombastic kaiju film that celebrates the monsters and the escapist action. He wrote on X,

“I watched “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.” It was a monster movie from “Toho Champion Festival” that I was crazy about as a child. It reminded me of the “speech bubbles” between Godzilla and Anguirus in “Godzilla vs. Gigan”… This film is a genuine monster movie that depicts monster action, monster battles, and their growth and drama without too much human drama

…The hints of friendship in this film are very touching. In a sense, it’s no lie that it “crosses the line.” The tone of the film can be understood by watching Kong suffering from a toothache at the beginning of the film.”

Kojima’s lengthy reviews of films he admires have become popular with fans. His trademark one-line reviews of films he supposedly did not have good things to say about, as he did recently with Madame Web (via X). His glowing reviews for Godzilla x Kong signal his stamp of approval for the film. Godzilla x Kong has now crossed the $500 million mark at the box office (via Deadline).

Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures collaborated on the huge tentpole films Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The two films have struck a chord with audiences and have topped the box office of the year so far, (Dune: Part Two has crossed $700 million and Godzilla x Kong has passed $500 million via Deadline).

Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca, Co-Chairs & CEOs at Warner Bros, released a celebratory statement, thanking Denis Villeneuve, Adam Wingard, and all individuals involved for bringing such amazing projects to audiences around the world. They also beamed about the glowing box office results of both films and gave credit to the hard work of the team behind both films. The statement read,

“We congratulate our partners at Legendary, Denis Villeneuve, Adam Wingard, and their casts and crews for bringing these amazing projects to life and to audiences around the world. We are also very proud of the work our global marketing and distribution teams have undertaken on behalf of Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong – these box office milestones are a testament to their tremendous efforts.”

The huge success of both films has boosted Warner Bros after a slump in 2023 with its tentpole DC films underperforming at the box office. The comeback which started with Wonka continues with Dune 2 and Godzilla x Kong. Coming up, they possibly have yet another hit on their hands as George Miller returns with the Mad Max prequel film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in May.

Godzilla x Kong and Dune: Part Two are currently running successfully in theatres.
