In a recent interview with IGN, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the mastermind behind Elden Ring, unveiled tantalizing details about the upcoming DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree.
The interview delved into the characters and gruesome histories that players can expect to come across in this highly anticipated expansion. One particular reveal involves a colossal weapon, a giant basket of flaming kindling, with Miyazaki hinting at a dark and brutal past tied to the Land of Shadow.
Elden Ring’s Land of Shadow Unveils Many Dark Secrets
Miyazaki’s interview with IGN provided us with a glimpse into the rich lore and terrifying prospects awaiting players in Shadow of the Erdtree. One of the standout features introduced in the trailer that caught many eye is the ominous giant basket of flaming kindling.
When asked about it, Miyazaki said the following:
Without saying too much, we can’t give away the name just yet officially, but yes, it was a really gruesome weapon that was used. And the kindling that you see is actually the remains of bodies that were put in there to burn.
The vague yet vivid description of the atrocities that took place in this shadowy realm sound horrifyingly intriguing, and June 21st really couldn’t come any sooner.
As the interview continued, attention turned to a central figure in the DLC trailer—a man in red surrounded by snakes and flames.
Miyazaki confirmed that this character, officially revealed as Messmer, holds a pivotal role in the DLC. This key figure embodies the overarching theme of shadow that’s pervasive in Shadow of the Erdtree, and his significance becomes apparent when you factor in the context of the Erdtree’s mythology.
Messmer’s association with the thrones at the base of the Erdtree was especially delved into during the interview. The key art featuring Messmer seated in a throne-like chair resembles the iconic boss room where players face Morgott, highlighting Messmer’s equal standing among other demigods and children of Marika.
As players explore Messmer’s narrative, they’ll have a better understanding regarding his omission from the legends of the Erdtree and the Lands Between.
Shadow of the Erdtree is a Challenging Continuation of the Base Game
Miyazaki’s intriguing answers from his interview only scratch the surface of what awaits in the soon-to-be-released DLC. As players brace themselves for the release of Shadow of the Erdtree, they might want to brace their character too, with some of the better gear lying around.
The DLC will retain the game’s hallmark difficulty while allowing players the freedom to approach encounters strategically.
If you’re itching for another challenge like Malenia provided, Miyazaki has assured players that there are plenty of optional bosses that hardcore players can try out for their satisfaction. Players can still progress with the DLC’s story without attempting these.
