Hidetaka Miyazaki’s games are all set in vastly different universes, but they will all feature some references to each other. One of the most enduring of these references is the Moonlight Greatsword, which has appeared in almost every FromSoftware game.

Elden Ring featured this weapon as well, which could be obtained by completing Ranni’s quest line. Shadow of the Erdtree will bring more references to the table, and a recent showcase has revealed one that is a very obvious throwback to one of the studio’s most challenging titles.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is one of the most unique games from FromSoftware. It can be considered the most linear of the studio’s titles and breaks away from the established RPG formula. Instead of exploring the world and farming resources to level up certain attributes, players could unlock attack power and skills to help overcome even the toughest opponents.

Sekiro also took a major departure from the other games by taking away the ability to switch weapons. While Wolf’s prosthetic arm allowed for various tools to be used in combat, players only had access to a sword and several combat moves. However, bosses had access to a wide variety of armaments, which could be overcome, to a degree, using Wolf’s various skills and sword arts.

Miyazaki has referenced the 2019 release in Shadow of the Erdtree in a very interesting manner. The Red Bull Levels event showcased exclusive gameplay from the DLC and featured various content creators trying out the different new weapons coming in the expansion. One of the eight new weapon types coming to the game is known as the Great Katana, and it is shockingly similar to the blade wielded by Great Shinobi Owl.

As Wolf’s mentor and surrogate father, we face off against Owl in the game, and it becomes a game of sword strikes and ninja arts. The Shadow of the Erdtree variant also features a special Ash of War that looks similar to Wolf’s Ichimonji Ashina Art, further solidifying the reference.

New spells, swords and everything in between coming soon!

Hidetaka Miyazaki has confirmed the DLC is the largest expansion FromSoftware has ever worked on, and this goes beyond just the scale of the world. While that itself is the size of Limgrave, and people estimate it will take 30 to 40 hours to completely explore, the new weapons are going to add a new dimension to combat.

Throwing weapons are coming back, and in a big way. We aren’t talking about small throwing knives or kukris. Many main weapons can now be thrown as a charged heavy attack. The weapon reappears in your hand, so you won’t be left with just your fists, but this enables some degree of ranged combat for even melee builds.

Other weapons, such as the light greatsword Milady and the Backhand Blade double scimitar, will feature acrobatic skills, allowing players to close in distance and deal quick damage to their foes. All in all, we can expect some serious updates to Elden Ring’s combat.

From understanding the complexities of a multilayer narrative to the simply joy of "big gun go boom", my goal is to capture all the emotions in between and put them down in an engaging manner.
