When we tally up all these films together, the business that these projects have generated over the span of 12 months stacks up quite a large sum of money, which is what the companies want to see as their Christmas presents. And when it comes to who got the biggest one among them, it was naturally the star kid of the entertainment industry, Disney, which again was crowned the highest-grossing studio this year on the domestic scale.

It’s no secret that the film industry is dominated by a few major studios that have the financial resources and reputation to create major blockbusters in cinema, and ahead of all of them by a long mile is Disney. The studio is so influential that it has become an unstoppable force in the entertainment industry across the globe, which has other studios competing with them to just try and keep up.

Along with the biggest financial pull in the industry at their disposal, it’s no wonder that the studio became the highest-grossing among its peers. As the numbers are now out, it’s said that Disney has grossed a total of $1.88 Billion at the domestic box office. Considering all the films from the parent company and its subsidiaries, it’s still a very hefty chunk of money.

The runner-ups after the entertainment juggernaut are Universal Pictures, WB, Sony, and Paramount respectively. Each of these studios has managed to put out either one or more major blockbusters to secure their spot among the top five studios.

What is interesting to see is that despite Paramount Pictures releasing films from the Transformers franchise as well as the seventh installment of the Mission: Impossible series, they only managed to make it to the fifth spot behind Sony Pictures.

How Disney managed to become the highest-grossing studio of 2023 is a question that most people have the answer to, and to put it simply, it was through sheer volume.

The biggest success that the studio saw was with the release of Avatar: Way of Water, which grossed more than $684 Million at the domestic box office. But apart from that, the company only saw marginal returns in comparison to other projects. Its live-action remakes and animated features did moderately well, whereas its biggest cash cow, Marvel Studios, only managed to deliver Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as a smashing hit with a string of failures.
