The game became the best-selling game in 2023 with a whopping 22 million sales across platforms, and there were chances that it might be beaten by Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but it has now been confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy beat every other game released in the year and topped the sales charts.

Earlier last month, Warner Bros. Games Entertainment president David Haddad revealed in an interview with Variety that Hogwarts Legacy crossed 22 million sales in 2023, becoming the “best-selling game of the year in the industry worldwide.” The game even beat the likes of popular titles such as Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto, which dominated the sales chart for fifteen long years since 2008.

Hogwarts Legacy left behind titles including Modern Warfare 3, EA Sports FC 24, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was in fifth place as per the physical sales, but there were speculations that Nintendo’s title might surpass Hogwarts Legacy sales with its digital sales.

However, it has been revealed that Hogwarts Legacy has beaten The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and become the undisputed best-selling game of last year. According to Nintendo’s new financial report, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold 20.28 million copies in 2023, falling behind the Harry Potter title.

It is important to know that it was still a close fight given that Tears of the Kingdom was released three months after the launch of Hogwarts Legacy and exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. This achievement of 20.28 million sales is not a small feat, and it speaks volumes about the game and how popular it is among Nintendo players.

Hogwarts Legacy was released in February 2023 and broke several records, starting with its launch. The game broke the record for the most-viewed single-player game in the history of Twitch. The game sold 12 million copies in just two weeks of its release and became the most successful Harry Potter game in history.

The game also hit the Steam peak player count at 879,308 concurrent players and recorded the 8th-highest peak ever for any game genre. Moreover, it also saw the fifth-largest peak player count for a paid game. It also recorded the third-highest player count for a single-player title and the second-highest peak for a single-player-only title.

Hogwarts Legacy has achieved all these significant feats despite controversies such as the PlayStation 5 exclusive quest, comments, and the involvement of Harry Potter novel author J.K. Rowling.

Nothing was able to pull players away from the game, and there’s a possibility that the rumored sequel might break these records pretty easily.
