The Top Gun movies have both been box office hits, with Tom Cruise leading the show. The 1986 movie started the story, and in 2022, we got Top Gun: Maverick, which further engrossed the audience. The second movie not only revived the franchise but Hollywood in its entirety. During and after the pandemic, audiences going to theatres to watch movies had gone down by large numbers.

But Top Gun: Maverick managed to change the scene completely, bringing audiences back to the theatres in droves. It became the second highest-grossing movie of 2022 and the highest-grossing movie of Cruise’s career, with a box-office collection of $1.496 billion. And soon, the buzz of a third movie started going around.

Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced Top Gun: Maverick alongside Cruise under Paramount Pictures, spoke to ComicBook.com about the third movie in the franchise. The third movie is supposed to be a direct sequel to Top Gun: Maverick, but given Tom Cruise is the leading star, and has many other projects in his bag, it all depends on him, when he can manage his time to work on the third movie.

“It’s hard to tell. You don’t know, you really don’t know. You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know. Because with Top Gun, you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you.”

Tom Cruise is definitely the man to take the story forward, but when that will happen, it is still in the air.

Jerry Bruckheimer is busy with his upcoming movie, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, starring Henry Cavill. The Guy Ritchie movie will be released on April 19, 2024, and the producer is making his rounds promoting the World War II spy movie. In one of his interviews with Screenrant, Bruckheimer, talking about Top Gun 3, reiterated that Tom Cruise would be leading the third movie as well.

“It will be Tom Cruise. Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and he (Tom Cruise) said I really like that, so we’re developing it. But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing Mission: Impossible right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.”

Cruise has a packed schedule, with multiple projects that he is currently working on. Whether it is the eighth Mission Impossible movie or other projects, as Bruckheimer recalls, he surely has his hands full at the moment.
