Tom Cruise is arguably the last bonafide movie star in Hollywood as he has such a big power and influence over the industry and the films he makes. Throughout the years, he has made some great films and has given some fantastic performances. His Mission Impossible franchise has become one of the most successful franchises in Hollywood.
Another one of his franchises that he returned to after 35 years was 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick which became his highest-grossing film to date. Recently it was announced that a third Top Gun film is in development and now producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed some info regarding its progress. However, the discourse among fans regarding a third Top Gun film has been mixed.
Latest Update About Top Gun 3 Receives Mixed Reactions from Fans
Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick became one of the rare sequels that improved upon the first film and elevated the franchise to new heights. While the film included the expected aerial action and spectacle, fans were surprised by the emotional weight of the film which was driven by character-drama. Cruise and team made a film which will be talked about for many years to come.
The film ended on a high and fans were very thrilled and satisfied with how it provided a sense of closure for Cruise’s Maverick. However, a third Top Gun film was recently announced to be in development and not all fans were thrilled with that idea. Franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer gave an update about the film in an interview with ScreenRant.
Bruckheimer stated that Cruise will return in the third film and director Joseph Kosinski recently pitched a story idea that Cruise liked. However, Cruise is busy with other prior commitments, so the makers are working on a screenplay for the time being. Bruckheimer hopes that Cruise gets his hands on a complete script that he loves soon. He said,
“It will be Tom Cruise. Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and he (Tom Cruise) said I really like that, so we’re developing it…Tom is so busy. He’s doing Mission: Impossible right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.”
Fans were divided about this development with many believing that a third film is not necessary. The bar has been set too high and a third film might hamper the reputation of the franchise if it does not live up to its potential. Here are some of the reactions on X,
Not sure how I feel about this. They struck box office gold with two Top Gun films, but they were decades apart and had a major nostalgia boost. A third film isn't going to have that. But I don't want to doubt Tom Cruise's quality control at this point in his legendary career. pic.twitter.com/ncRJAT2wDM

It remains to be seen what Kosinski and Cruise cook up for the third film. While fans are understandably worried that the third film might ruin the benchmark that the second film set, Cruise is known for elevating his projects and one hopes that the third film at least lives up to the second film.
