After several delays, Ubisoft’s open-world pirate game, Skull and Bones, is coming out on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on February 16, 2024. The company released its open beta, where the game is available for free from February 8 to February 11. The game’s official website explains that progress made during the open beta will be carried over to the official release.

Players are already scratching their heads over a tool that they will require for the journey that lies ahead: a crowbar. The tool is helpful while scavenging the wrecks of other ships lost to battle. It is found near the shipwreck of Exeter, the player’s now-destroyed ship. However, players won’t be able to find it, as it also requires the pirates to do some work.

Finding a crowbar is not that big of a deal in the game, but that will be kind of a tutorial for the players. Initially, after the opening battle sequence where the character is nearly drowned and loses all the pirate equipment, the player can take sail on a new small raft towards an island. There, they’ll talk to the Pirate Chief, who just wishes to get out alive from the battle that gutted Exeter.

The character then makes a deal where they have to find and deliver the Kingpin’s contraband, and the Pirate Chief promises the location of Sainte-Anne, a place considered the “pirate paradise.” This is where the initial clue for the crowbar appears. The contract called “A Pirate’s Deal” offers the player information about the quest and its rewards, which include a crowbar.

It is as simple as that: complete the quest and get the tool. If players try to enter the ship before accepting the contract, the game won’t allow it. Additionally, the quest gets interesting as the raft crew encounters sharks trying to satiate their hunger. While in the waters, players can catch small fish, which can later be used to feed the crew.

Using the Crowbar in the Game

The crowbar is available only after the game's initial quest.

The crowbar in Skull and Bones will appear automatically via a Salvaging minigame while players try to enter a shipwreck to find utilities. Alongside the game, a prompt will appear where a user is required to tap the button to stop the swinging crowbar icon.

The minigame contains a black, a yellow, and a green region with a crowbar; stopping at the latter means more power while breaking open the lock; yellow will have less power; and black is a miss hit.

Skull and Bones drew inspiration from Assasin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. In fact, it was supposed to be a spin-off of the game before becoming an independent project. As the official release nears, the community hopes Ubisoft’s new project will be something it’ll enjoy. However, a leak suggests the game already has a number of issues.

If that is the case, Ubisoft should fix them before Skull and Bones comes out to keep the gameplay seamless.
