The Hulk has always been a formidable character in the entire Marvel Universe, whether it be the cinematic verse or the comic book verse. Known for his ferocity, the character is as deadly as Bruce Banner is timid. Marvel comics feature numerous instances when the character goes haywire, leading to some drastic decisions to be taken in the heat of the moment.
One of these countless incidents has been featured in Immortal Hulk Vol. 17 & 18. During the comics, the Hulk goes ballistic, and Iron Man’s actions lead to the Green Monster being tortured in the most unimaginable way in one of the creepiest arcs of Marvel comics.
When Hulk Went Ballistic in Immortal Hulk Vol 17
Back in Immortal Hullk Vol 15, Bruce Banner, or Hulk, is possessed by the One Below All, leading to the Hulk acting up and causing a rampage. In Vol 17 of the same series, in a town in Iowa called Georgeville, the Hulk is on a literal killing rampage.
Battling the Avengers just outside the town, the Green Goliath proves to be a much fiercer foe than what the team has faced. Thor loses a tooth, and She-Hulk faces a humiliating defeat. Even Tony Stark nearly escapes death as Hulk goes on to destroy his Hulk Buster.
As a last resort, Iron Man suggests using the Helios Laser. An incredibly powerful laser beam, the laser is capable of causing massive destruction, including killing the Hulk. Although the beam only neutralizes the character, turning him into a churned corpse, the Avengers are at first reluctant to use it.
However, with things getting out of hand, and the Avengers worried that they would be burying one of their own teammates for good, Iron Man decides to use the Helios Laser. The charred corpse of Bruce Banner is later transported to the Shadow Base, the headquarters of United States Hulk Operations. There Banner is upside down as he faces Dr. Clive and it is later revealed that Banner, aka Hulk’s bloody part, has been chopped with an adamantium saw and kept in different containers.
Hulk is Tortured Most Brutally in Immortal Hulk Vol 18
After being captured by the US Hulk Operations and his body and organs being kept in different containers, the Hulk is in the hands of Dr. Clive. In the laboratory, numerous experiments are being planned to find out the regeneration powers of the Hulk since his severed parts combine when they come together.
Meanwhile, as the severed head of the Green Goliath watches Dr. Clive work on his heart and other body parts, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel places a sudden spotlight on US Hulk Operatives and announces Gamma Flight, the team responsible for finding Hulk after he is being secretly kept at the Shadow Base.
As Clive starts describing in meticulous detail what inhumane experiments he will be conducting on him, Hulk’s head keeps on smiling, leading the doctor to realize that the green monster is allowing them to experiment on him. As soon as he realizes this, the powerful creature‘s severed parts break open their containers and start pulling them together.
As the reformation continues, Hulk even pulls Dr. Clive into his body as the doctor pleads and shrieks with pain. He then makes it outside and turns back into Banner. While Bruce Banner is unable to recall the events, he can hear his father’s voice in his head menacingly laughing at him.
And so while the Hulk was tortured in an absolutely brutal way, he ended up killing Dr. Clive and hurting the Avengers in a much, much worse way.
