Although Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland are loved as the web-slingers in their own respective places, Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man was just a bit different. Maybe it was his physique or just his impeccable performance in the role, but what can’t be denied is just how distinctive his version of Peter Parker was — something that further made fans yearn for his unmade third installment.

That being said, the third installment in his film series would have unarguably further explained the greatest mystery related to his friendly neighborhood superhero. But since the film never came to be, fans thought it better to ask Garfield to unwind that mystery. However, as surprising as it may be, it turns out that even the 40-year-old actor is as much in the dark about this as everyone else!

Even Andrew Garfield is Clueless About This One Spider-Man Mystery

Though a lot of its aspects were pretty clear, The Amazing Spider-Man still left a few strings undone behind. One of these, which notably became a topic of great mystery among fans over the years, was none other than the post-credits scene of the 2012 masterpiece.

As those who are well-versed in the TASM universe must already know, this scene is actually the one where a mysteriously shadowy figure with a hat and a cloak (played by the late Michael Massee in the film) visits Rhys Ifans‘ Dr. Curt Connors in jail to talk about Peter Parker.

While it was widely speculated that this character was The Gentleman aka Gustav Fiers, who is notably a senior exec at Oscorp as well as one of the most prominent council members of HYDRA in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this was never quite confirmed officially.

This is why Garfield was asked about the same during an interview with CinemaBlend while he was busy promoting his blockbuster Hacksaw Ridge. But, much to everyone’s surprise, even the very actor who donned the role of the iconic web-slinger in the saga is unaware of this mystery.

According to what Andrew Garfield shared in the interview:

“I don’t know that the filmmakers knew who the hell that guy was! [Laughs] I don’t know, actually. I actually don’t know. No.”

Surprised yet? Well, to some extent, it is only understandable because of Marvel’s extreme secrecy regarding their projects. But what’s even more amusing than this is the fact that Garfield believes this to be “good news” that no one will ever find out about this mystery either!

“The good news is that now none of us are ever going to find out”, Says Andrew Garfield

As unbelievable as it may seem to you, this is exactly what Garfield said: He does believe that fans not figuring out this mystery is “good news.” However, this doesn’t come without some genuine reasoning from him, which is quite considerably accurate as well.

According to what the Tick, Tick… Boom! star continued to say in the interview:

“The good news is that now none of us are ever going to find out, because that version of Spider-Man is no longer. Now we got Tom Holland, who I really think is going to do some beautiful stuff.”

Seems like he just wanted to promote Tom Holland‘s epic saga, which is only understandable from someone as fine of a person as him. But will fans be able to live without diving deeper into this story and figuring out the truth? Let’s just say we won’t be too sure about that.

You can stream The Amazing Spider-Man film series on Netflix.
