The mania that was the Barbenheimer phenomenon has put the stars in those films in the center of the stage for the world to marvel at, which also includes Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy for their roles as the titular protagonists of Barbie and Oppenheimer respectively. But when it comes to iconic characters, Robbie still has the immortal image of portraying the deranged Harley Quinn in the DCEU from the past.

But with the DCEU now a thing of the past, the actress has passed the baton of the character to Lady Gaga, who will be playing the role of Quinn in the upcoming film Joker: Folie à Deux. When questioned whether both the stars have talked with each other regarding the role, Robbie recently revealed that they haven’t, specifically for the reason that she wants to be surprised at what Gaga brings to the table with her portrayal.

When it comes to legacy roles in the film industry, the ones that have been passed down to new generations over the years, there are quite a few that leave an impression and an expectation for the new stars to carry on that legacy into the future. In the eyes of Margot Robbie, that character is Harley Quinn, the one she made iconic through her depiction in the no longer functioning DCEU.

But now, it seems like Lady Gaga is ready to take the torch from Robbie and make her debut as The Joker’s equally demented accomplice in the upcoming Joker: Folie á Deux from DC’s Elseworlds series. But contrary to popular belief, there seems to be no communication taking place between the two actresses on any pointers on how to make a good character even better.

The reason for this is simple for Robbie to answer. In her recent appearance on the red carpet at The Golden Globe Awards, the I, Tonya star revealed to Variety that she hasn’t talked about the role of Quinn with the Grammy Award-winning singer because she wants to be pleasantly surprised as well on what Gaga has to offer as the character in the upcoming film. She said:

“She’s going to crush it! She’s going to be amazing, I actually haven’t spoken to her about it. I almost don’t want to know so I can save it for a surprise when I see the movie.”

The actress also revealed that as she had finished up with Barbie, she was now on somewhat of an involuntary hiatus from the industry.

While it may seem like the actress’ career has turned towards an even greater destination for her future in acting, she once revealed to Deadline that she had not been on any set as an actor ever since she wrapped up the production of Barbie, which has become somewhat of a break from her acting career. She said:

“I also think everyone’s probably sick of the sight of me for now. I should probably disappear from screens for a while. Honestly, if I did another movie too soon, people would say, “Her again? We just did a whole summer with her. We’re over it.” I don’t know what I’ll do next, but I hope it’s a little while away.”

Thus, as she now also become a producer in many recent and upcoming projects in the industry, she may just involuntarily be so busy that she hasn’t had the time to focus on anything else.

Joker: Folie à Deux, in cinemas on October 8th, 2024.
