Emily Rudd playing the role of Nami in the recent One Piece live-action adaptation series is without a doubt one of the best decisions the casting team of Netflix has ever made. Not only does she play her role with perfection, but she quite literally descends into the character of Nami, essentially giving the best performance on screen.
One major aspect challenge that is faced during the production of any anime’s live-action adaptation is the reproduction of stunts in real life. This was the case with the One Piece live-action series too, but fortunately, they were able to overcome it with the help of the dedicated cast, such as Rudd herself, who agreed to do all her grueling stunt scenes on her own.
Emily Rudd Agreed To Do All Her Stunt Scenes By Herself In One Piece Live-Action Series
Revealed in a behind-the-scenes video released by Netflix, Emily Rudd discloses how she failed to feel challenged when she was introduced to the stunt scenes in the script. Talking about her experience, she said:
“Nami is a pro at the bo staff, and that’s something you see in the manga, and we wanted to bring more into the live-action series, and god, the fight sequences are so fun to do. So, I’m kind of like ‘Throw them all in, I’ll do them all.”
Emily Rudd further reveals how she actually grew up doing karate, so it was an exciting experience for her to put those skills to the test once again. She was also appreciated by Franz Spilhaus, the stunt coordinator for the series, who unveils how he and Rudd’s stunt double were both impressed with her capability of performing her own scenes.
Another factor that makes Rudd perfect for the role of Nami is how Marc Jobst, the director of the pilot episodes as well as one of the casting members preferred hiring actors who were able to play out their stunts for the live-action series.
Unfortunately, this ideology might not always work, as it would be particularly difficult for the whole crew to perform the better part of the Luffy Gear 5 vs Kaido fight. Jalex Rosa, one of the most renowned VFX artists on social media platforms, took it upon himself to bring Luffy Gear 5 and his fight against Kaido to life by producing a live-action adaptation of the same. Released over 4 months ago, his video has gained appreciation from fans around the globe, with many suggesting Netflix should hire him as part of the production crew.
The content creator essentially took his own body as an asset to be imported into motion-tracking software, and after many weeks of hard work and editing, was finally able to create a perfect adaptation of Luffy’s fight.
