Hugh Grant was one of the quintessential rom-com leading men of the 90s among the likes of Richard Gere and Leonardo DiCaprio. He was a popular heartthrob who managed to impress fans with his natural charm and his nonchalant humor. His roles in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones’ Diary, and Love Actually made audiences swoon in the 90s and early 2000s.

Another one of Grant’s popular films was 2002’s Two Weeks Notice where he was paired with Sandra Bullock. The duo had met five years prior and they had discussed working together. But Grant made a pretty bad impression on Bullock by narrating what he calls a ‘disgusting story’, which led to Grant not hearing from the actress for over 3 years.

The 90s were a prolific year for both Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock as they made some of their most memorable roles during that decade. Grant was the rising lover boy charming audiences with his flamboyant nature in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Sense and Sensibility, and Notting Hill.

Bullock on the other hand found success with films such as Speed, Demolition Man, and While You Were Sleeping. It seems the two planned on working on a project together years before they came together for 2002’s Two Weeks Notice. As told by Grant on BBC, the two first met five years prior to that film at a ‘relationship meeting’ conducted by industry executives.

During the meet, Grant seemingly embarrassed himself by telling a very disgusting story to Bullock, which according to him, revolted her. She never contacted him again for over three years. However, they sorted out their differences and became great friends by the time they were done shooting Two Weeks Notice. Grant said,

“We first met up about five years ago and had what Hollywood calls ‘a relationship meeting,’ where you talk about the possibility of working together. I told Sandy a very disgusting story, which I think revolted her, she left the room, and I didn’t hear from her for three years after that”

While Grant did not tell the specifics about the story he told Bullock, he certainly ruined their first meeting, which cost him three years of silence. However, the duo got on extremely well together on Two Weeks Notice, and the crew on the film got irritated by their constant bickering and laughter (via Express).

The film itself was a hit at the box office with audiences loving the chemistry between the two actors. It grossed $199 million against a budget of $60 million (via Box Office Mojo).

Sandra Bullock Has a Specific Pet Peeve About Romantic Comedies

Despite starring in rom-coms like The Proposal, Sandra Bullock hates the limitations the genre brings to women

Sandra Bullock has starred in a fair share of rom-coms over the years. While You Were Sleeping with Bill Pullman, Two Weeks Notice with Hugh Grant, and The Proposal with Ryan Reynolds are some that audiences still have a soft spot for. However, Bullock hates the genre for being the only one where Hollywood lets women be funny.

In an interview with The Guardian, the actress lamented the fact that actress could only show their comedic chops in romantic comedies and were never given a proper comedy where they would be the lead back in the day. She expressed her desire to do a comedic role in a proper film of that genre and exclaimed that it’s high time for Hollywood to not take itself very seriously and have fun. Bullock said,

“Usually comedy is only available to us ladies in the romantic comedy. That’s why I hate romantic comedies. I want to make comedic-comedies – let’s get back to being funny!”

Bullock is currently taking a break from films while his co-star Hugh Grant is continuing to display his amazing comedic chops in recent films like Wonka, and Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Fans can watch their unlikely but adorable chemistry in Two Weeks Notice on Apple TV+.
