Hollywood star Charlize Theron has continued to captivate the audience with her talent, dedication, and her incredible performances on the silver screen. While the actress is known for her ability to delve into complex characters and give stunning portrayals, there are times when she needs a boost. And she does not hesitate to take extreme measures to bring the best out of her. Theron did something similar while filming the 2011 comedy-drama Young Adult with Patton Oswalt.
The film follows Mavis Gary, an alcoholic writer of young adult novels, who moves back to her hometown in an attempt to rekindle her romance with her ex-boyfriend, who is married and father to a newborn daughter. Theron, who starred alongside stars like Patrick Wilson and Patton Oswalt in the film, once shared that she used alcohol to enhance her performance in the 2011 film.
Charlize Theron Enjoyed Working With Patton Oswalt
Charlize Theron took a brief break from her acting career in 2009 and made her return to the big screen with the 2011 comedy-drama. She shared that she was excited about her return as she wanted to work with Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman on a project like Young Adult.
And one of the things she most enjoyed during its filming was her co-star Patton Oswalt’s company. The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actor portrayed Matt Freehauf, a former classmate that Mavis Gary doesn’t even remember. However, the two get close as the story progresses.
The Monster actress shared that they were able to connect really well since they first met, which also helped with their characters in the film. During an interview with The Film Experience, she shared, “He didn’t let me get away with my sh*t. I didn’t let him get away with his sh*t.”
Theron also shared that they were almost like their characters and developed a relationship where “he pushed my buttons, and I pushed back.” The duo also shared the secret behind what helped Theron and her co-star to give even better performances on screen.
Charlize Theron And Patton Oswalt’s Acting Juice
Young Adult was very well received by the audience and critics as well. Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt were highly praised for their performance in the film. During an interview with Collider, they were asked about the secret behind their “honest and real” scenes.
Answering the question if they prepared or rehearsed a lot for their scenes, the Mad Max star said, “A lot of alcohol.” Her co-star Oswalt described it as “acting juice” as he shared that they got along really well since their first table read for the film.
“We call it acting juice. We kind of got along right at the first table read,” the comedian shared. Theron also shared that she did not want to go through a rehearsal, and neither did the film’s director Jason Reitman. So they decided to get to it after two table reads that the directed conducted previously at his house.
Young Adult is available on HBO Max.
