With Echo, the world saw Alaqua Cox celebrate her nativity alongside the challenges she faced being deaf and an amputee. Unable to deter from her goals, Cox made it big into the world of Hollywood despite starring in two series and the world loves her for it. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallonthe actress talked about how she got into the role of Maya Lopez and how acting was never the plan for her!

“Honestly, acting was never on my rader,” her interpreter said. “Until I had a friend – well, they posted the casting call. They were looking for an indigenous woman and deaf in their 20s and I had friends send it to me and I was like, I was kind of hesitant.”

“I didn’t want to do it at first then I had two other friends send it to me and I thought ‘Eh, I’ll give it a shot,’ I didn’t think I was going to get it because I’m an amputee and Maya is not an amputee herself. So, in the back of my mind, I thought, ‘I’m not gonna get it.”

Alaqua Cox revealed that three months later she got the role but she kept asking herself “Why me?”. The actress further continued that the cast and crew members were very accommodating to her and her disability as well.

Portraying the role of Maya Lopez perfectly, Alaqua Cox revealed that there were plenty of things that were common between her and Maya Lopez. As the interview progressed, Cox revealed that her on-screen character was on a journey to reconnect with her indigenous roots!

“Oh, Maya is a bad*ss. She is on a journey to Oklahoma to reconnect with her indigenous roots, and she’s finding her identity. She’s trying to reconnect with humanity.”

Well, Echo received an average score of 6.1/10 on IMDB and 73% on Rotten Tomatoes with Vincent D’Onofrio also starring alongside the actress. With Alaqua Cox firmly in the MCU, Echo is available to stream on Disney+ in the U.S.
