Brie Larson has been vocal about many things including her criticism of the gender bias in and around Hollywood. While accepting the Crystal Award for Excellence in 2018, Larson boldly stated the biases of movie critics.
The video of her acceptance speech has resurfaced on X, creating another instant debate. Larson-starrer The Marvels is all set to hit the theaters and the resurfaced video of her bashing movie critics based on gender biases certainly opened up the debate on the inclusivity.
Brie Larson On The Bias Among Hollywood Critics
During her acceptance speech for the Crystal Award for Excellence, Brie Larson boldly raised the issue of poor inclusivity among Hollywood critics. Referring to The University of Southern California’s Annenberg Inclusivity Initiative released a report, Larson said, “67% of the top critics reviewing the 100 highest-grossing movies in 2017 were white males.” Less than a quarter were white women, and “less than 10% were [underrepresented] men. Only 2.5% of those top critics were women of color,” she added.
“On top of all of this, am I saying that I hate white dudes? No, I’m not. But what I am saying is, if you make a movie that is a love letter to women of color there is an insanely low chance a woman of color will have the chance to see your movie and review your movie… I’m just saying we need to be conscious of our bias and do our part to make sure that everyone is in the room.”
The actor also acknowledged the fact that reviews matter. “It really sucks that reviews matter, but reviews matter,” she added saying the importance of good reviews that can help movies to rise to prominence. However, who is reviewing the movie has been a concern for the actor.
Fans Reacted to Brie Larson’s Resurfaced Video
Larson has indicated that such biases have prevailed among Hollywood critics. “We are expanding to make films that better reflect the people that buy movie tickets,” Larson said but sadly, those people are devoid of public discourse on those films. “I don’t hate white dudes, there are just facts,” she said. “I do not need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work for him about A Wrinkle in Time—it wasn’t made for him!” she added. While the resurfaced video has sparked another debate, many fans came in support of the actor.
They have hated her since she said it but continue to prove her RIGHT with reviews that are sexist or racist and have nothing to do with the movies they are “critiquing” half the time.

Say it loud, Brie. I often question why those critics even are given jobs. Is it their job to divide everyone with hate for women or something?
This isn’t a Star Wars movie, it’s a Marvel movie and it’s not like She-Hulk either.
Those critics need to be replaced.

She’s not wrong.

Because they are so deeply embedded in the industry, there is now just a huge portion of 40+ year old white male critics who will never fairly rate any project she ever does because they will never get over getting called out.

And when every insecure white male fan heard that, they do what they always do, ie, feel personally attacked and made it personal right back while coming up with every predictable excuse.

In the video, Larson was keen on a wider perspective. “I know that this means that my work will be shown, digested, discussed by a variety of people,” she said. “Not just a singular perspective. I want to know what my work means to the world, not a narrow view,” she added. Now, fans reacting to this has opened up the discourse and it would be interesting how this event impacts The Marvels.
The Marvels will hit the theaters on 10 November 2023.
