Not only was it physically and mentally demanding, but it was tough to shoot when he had just returned to health. Despite being healthy, the actor’s endurance was not as before (via Yahoo Entertainment). With over 30 broken bones, suffering several injuries, and half of his body rebuilt with metal, the actor was understandably worried about the shoot (via GMA).

In a recent interview with ET, the actor thus, remarked how doubtful he was of his return,

It was something unlike I really felt before, I was in a place of self-doubt. I was nervous that I can’t perform just basic duties like walking. I don’t know if I’m physically capable… ’cause you know, it’s 12 hours, 14 hours on a set.

The intense mental preparation it took for him to bounce back after the accident and to get back to the set was too much for him. At one point, the actor even expressed how the whole experience made him even more anxious and nervous.

Returning to work when he was still doubtful of his abilities, despite being excited to be back, was more taxing than Jeremy Renner could have imagined. Doubtful and feeling burdened by the expectations of those around him made the Marvel star even more anxious than he already was.

Still receiving regular physical therapy, the actor revealed how the first days of being on the set of Mayor of Kingstown felt to him during his interview with ET.

Whether you’re doing stunts or not, it’s exhausting. That doesn’t feel very good, doesn’t make me feel confident ’cause I’m not confident in my body, my ability, right? So I wasn’t quite there yet.

Fortunately for him, the cast and crew of the Mayor of Kingstown were generous and helpful to him, especially after he fell asleep in the middle of the shoot one day. Understanding that long hours of the shoot would put him under duress and hinder his recovery, his hours were reduced and more breaks were given to him.

Hearing his account, it is commendable how dedicated Renner is to his craft. While his resilience and determination serve as an inspiration to many, it is heartening to see the support he received from the cast and crew during his recovery.
