Anatomy of a Fall is considered at the 2024 Oscars as one of the favorites. With five nominations under its belt, including one for Best Picture, Anatomy of a Fall is Sandra Hüller’s second film to be nominated for Best Picture this year, with the other one being The Zone of Interest.
Directed by Justine Triet and starring Sandra Hüller in the lead role, Anatomy of a Fall, the French legal drama thriller focuses on Sandra Voyter, a writer facing suspicion in her husband’s murder and seeking to establish her innocence.
She also played Hedwig Höss, wife of the German Nazi commandant Rudolf Höss, in Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama, The Zone of Interest, which also got five nominations and is a clear favorite to win the Best International Feature category.
In What Aspect Does Sandra Hüller Find It Hard to Agree with Meryl Streep?
Last year, in an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the German actor talked about one particular thing she does not seem to agree with another legendary actor, Meryl Streep.
Sandra Hüller said that though she admires Streep a lot, she could not align with the Little Women actor who has three Oscars to her name. Streep has won three Oscars, with two for Best Actress in a Leading Role and one for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
Acknowledging what Streep has done over the years, Hüller said THR that she could not fall in love with Hedwig Höss. She said:
“Meryl Streep says you have to love every character whether they are evil or not. I thought about that for a very long time, and while I love and adore Meryl and everything she’s done, I don’t think I agree. I didn’t love Hedwig Höss, and I never will.”
On being empathetic, Streep once said that it has given her the pleasure of transmitting the feelings of one character to the audience, and that must be the most beautiful joy for an actor. (Via Princeton University)
Sandra Hüller on The Zone of Interest
German actress Sandra Hüller is witnessing a remarkable feat as her two movies garnered the coveted Oscars nomination this year. While speaking about playing the role in Zone of Interest, she told multiple outlets that she initially didn’t want to be involved with any Nazi tales.
In an interview with the W Magazine, the actor said:
“It was a really difficult choice because I didn’t want to be involved with any Nazi tales. I think what the director, Jonathan Glazer, wanted to achieve was to make their lives as empty and meaningless as possible. He always told us, “Even when they’re in the garden or with their kids, they don’t feel anything.” There was a really big void that we had to deal with all the time.“
In another interview with Indie Wire, she said that had she known Nazis were involved, she might not have shown up for the film. However, she mentioned that she has been a fan of Glazer’s work and that she did not invest much effort in it.
Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest are available to rent or buy on Prime Video.
