The Marvel Cinematic Universe has just about the perfect cast for each and every comic book character they have brought to life. Yet that does not mean that the ‘perfect actors’ would want to continue playing their roles forever (clue Dave Bautista as Drax) and for someone like Brie Larson, who delivered Marvel’s first true bomb in years, the actress must certainly be looking to move outside the realms of the MCU.
Even though the actress has been on numerous occasions described as the perfect Captain Marvel, her recent ambiguous answers related to her future with Marvel seem to hint she might have already said goodbye to her fan-favorite role.
Brie Larson Might Not Be Marvel’s Captain Marvel Anymore
Captain Marvel is one of the most incredible characters in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe and its comic book verse. However, when it comes to the silver screen it is largely because of the tremendous portrayal of Brie Larson that the character has gotten as big as it is now.
Larson made her debut as the titular character in Marvel’s Captain Marvel and now the movie is among the highest-rated movies in the entire MCU on sites like Rotten Tomatoes. Furthermore, the movie made an impressive $1.12 billion worldwide against a budget of $175 million (via The Numbers).
However, the sequel to the movie, The Marvels became MCU’s first real bomb despite an impressive cast and amazing visuals. Against a budget of about $270 million (via Forbes), the movie just about $206 million (via Box Office Mojo).
While talking to Extra during the SAG Awards, Larson was asked about her upcoming Marvel projects and she stated she had nothing to say about it. Even last year when asked about her future in the MCU, she said something similar to Entertainment Tonight,
“I don’t want Marvel to come for me. But there is something. There is definitely something, to answer your question, that I would want to say, but I am not going to.”
Her vague and ambiguous reply has made fans believe that she might not return as Captain Marvel despite many accepting that she is the perfect actress for the role.
And in case such a scenario occurs, here are 5 great actresses who can potentially replace Larson as Captain Marvel:
5. Alexandra Daddario
From action movies such as San Andreas or Percy Jackson to intense dramas like Night Hunter and True Detective, Alexandra Daddario is one actress who can play any role in any genre perfectly effortlessly. Apart from her acting prowess, the actress’s striking appearance makes her a compelling choice for a role as titular as Captain Marvel.
Even her on-screen charm and incredible range as an actress to portray a wide array of roles make her one of the best choices to portray Carol Danvers.
4. Sydney Sweeney
Hollywood’s rising star and one of the most impeccable young actresses in the arena right now, Sydney Sweeney is a compelling actress who has already made her way into Sony’s Spider-Verse as one of the Spider-Women. Yet seeing how things went for her debut as a Marvel star, Sweeney seems like a perfect choice for Captain Marvel instead.
Not only is she an incredible actor but also has a commanding screen presence no matter what role she plays. Even though she is Spider-Woman, the actress can still portray Danvers thanks to the multiverse and diverging storylines.
3. Olivia Cooke
From science fiction to fantasy, there is hardly any genre that Olivia Cooke is not good at. Recently being praised for her impeccable performance in House of the Dragon, the actress has proven her talent in many diverse roles including the Academy Award-nominated, Sound of Metal.
Thanks to her ability to convey both vulnerability and the strength of her character simultaneously, Cooke is a strong contender for the role of Captain Marvel. Not only can she bring a fresh portrayal of the titular character but her natural charisma can bring a new life for the character.
2. Katheryn Winnick
Katheryn Winnick is no stranger to powerful and formidable female characters, seeing what an amazing job she did in the historical drama series, Vikings. Although the actress is a bit older in age, she can still portray the character by playing either an older version of Carol Danvers or by playing any other multiversal version of the character.
Furthermore, Winnick’s experience in embodying fierce and determined characters makes her a compelling choice for the Marvel role. Not only can she bring an authentic edge to the superhero but her starring as an older version of the character will give Marvel opportunities to explore the character in a new way.
1. Natalie Dormer
From The Hunger Games to Game of Thrones, Natalie Dormer is not an actress who is any stranger to directing all the attention to her. Dormer is further already aware of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having kissed Captain America in The First Avenger.
Having her star as Captain Marvel will not only be interesting but also bring some of the What If…? level flare in live-action by having her play some other iteration of Captain Marvel. Known for her acting range she can add depth to the already multi-layered character and possibly offer a more captivating portrayal of the Marvel character.
