Taz Skylar, also known as Sanji in the Netflix live-action adaptation of One Piece, portrayed an animated character flawlessly on screen. The character, known for being calm and composed, has captivated millions worldwide. For his wit and mystery in the manga, people love this character. But how did Taz Skylar manage to resonate with the character before he knew who Sanji was?
Netflix’s One Piece was released back on August 31, last year. It is based on Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling manga and one of the best Shōnen series ever created, One Piece. The series delves into the first 100 chapters of the manga and covers the adventures of the Straw Hats, led by Monkey D. Luffy as captain.
In an interview, Skylar spoke about the initial perspective he had in his mind when first got to read the script.
Sanji Actor Taz Skylar Reflected on His Initial Impressions of His Character
In an interview (done by Pankhuri Bhutani), Sanji actor Taz Skylar spoke about his first impressions of his character when he first read the script. When asked, “What were your first impressions of seeing all this as well as what were your first impressions of your own character.”
The actor gushed:
“That’s a good question. When I first read the script, it was only a portion of it since it wasn’t revealed who or what I was going to play. I just remember reading the extract and going like, ‘Oh, this is cool. This fits into my mouth and I know how to do this. I get what this person wants and how he operates and I believe I can do a good job with these words; this cadence and the way that this person speaks.’ It was only when I read the larger portion of the script that my initial impressions and thoughts about him (Sanji) were further confirmed.”
In the later part of the same interview, when questioned about the similarities Skylar feels with his character, he said:
“I fall in love very easily and often.”
The actor also stated that there are many other similarities. In particular, he’s very focused on the things he’s working on and prefers to do them excellently, without any interference. He appreciates how Sanji isn’t petty; rather, he sees Sanji as someone operating on a more elevated level of awareness.
One Piece’s Director About Taz Skylar’s Sanji
Netflix adapted Eiichiro Oda’s great manga One Piece into a live action. One of the directors, Marc Jobst, in an interview with Digital Spy, revealed that Skylar had to learn several moves, including front flips, back flips, and forward rolls. The director added that he had to “give his body a kind of fluidity, which would then enable those big, stretching things to feel much more organic to him.”
Jobst told Digital Spy, “You know, Nami with her bow staff, Sanji with his… fighting with his feet. I wanted that to be very breakdance-based so that he was fighting with his feet, and spinning and turning, and doing all that kind of stuff.”
Taz Skylar had to go through immense pressure while he was filming for the Eiichiro Oda-written manga. There were surely some tough tasks that had to be done, to make the scenes perfect. Skylar embarked on a journey to make his character what the fans see today.
