Nami, who serves as the navigator for Luffy’s crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, is one of the most prominent characters in Season 1 and the character was played by Emily Rudd who nailed the role. As a longtime One Piece fan, Rudd recognized the importance of representing Nami and the Straw Hat Pirates.

Emily Rudd and her Connection with Nami
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Emily Rudd explained how she has been kind of a navigator her whole life. She has been camping since childhood and that helped her connect with the character and understand it easily. She said:
“I am super good at it. I’m kind of like the default person that, if we’re in a new city, people are like ‘Hey Em, can you navigate us’ because I’ve just… I grew up camping. And so we have the paper maps, and it’s like – when I say ‘camping,’ I mean, like ‘middle of nowhere, the bathroom is a hole in the ground somewhere in the forest,’-type camping.”
Also, Rudd’s steadfast dedication to the part is one of the most astounding aspects of her quest to become Nami. Rudd’s involvement with One Piece extends beyond her role as an actress; she is a die-hard admirer of the manga series. Long before the live-action series was announced, she had been working towards her ambition of playing Nami.
Emily Rudd Believes She Was Born to Play Nami
Emily Rudd’s hiring as Nami in Netflix’s live-action One Piece is a great example of her steadfast dedication, a deliberate long game that paid off spectacularly. Rudd also mentioned that she worked extremely hard to be like Nami and that she sought to persuade as many people as possible to cast her in the role of the popular navigator. She had always been the family’s navigator, and she believed she was born to be Nami.
“I was always the person that was told by my family to navigate us. So, I guess I was born to be a navigator. I was – I was born to be Nami. Let’s say it! I’ll say it.”
