1994 saw some great movies: Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, The Lion King, and many more. None of them, though, managed to top one of James Cameron’s spy action comedies in terms of box office gross that year. With the film, James Cameron established himself as a major player in Hollywood and Arnold Schwarzenegger as a star of action films.
The action-comedy blockbuster has one striptease sequence starring the charismatic Arnold Schwarzenegger and the talented Jamie Lee Curtis. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his then-wife Maria Shriver engaged in some words regarding this scene and answered if ever he lied to his wife.
A Particular Instance Where Arnold Schwarzenegger Lied to Maria Shriver
During an episode of The Tonight Show, host Jay Leno asked Arnold Schwarzenegger if he ever lied to his ex-wife Maria Shriver. The Terminator star revealed that he had never lied to her. Leno then mentioned a strip tease moment he and Jamie Lee Curtis had in the James Cameron-helmed movie True Lies.
Leno began:
“There’s a scene where Jamie Lee Curtis does this strip tease, and you’re sitting in a chair in the house, and you have to watch her. I assume you have to do this over and over again to get it right. You go home and asked how was filming today, and you just go, ‘Oh just another day.’”
Arnold Schwarzenegger replied,
“That’s exactly what I do. I go home and then say, ‘It was a hard day at work and they do many stunts, and it’s a really difficult job.’”
When Maria Shriver asked him whether he himself did all those scenes, Schwarzenegger tried to convince her that it’s all those stand-ins and stunt people who do that.
“She saw me there, and I remember her turning to me in the middle of the screening and just looked to me and says, ‘Did you enjoy this?’”
And then Schwarzenegger told her, “I hated every hour of it.’” He continued trying to imitate how Maria rolled her eyes.
Jaime Lee Curtis about Filming True Lies
True Lies debuted at No. 1 at the box office and made more than $365 million overseas, making it a huge critical and financial success. For her portrayal, Curtis won a Golden Globe and garnered ecstatic acclaim. She called the film “without question, the greatest experience of my professional life so far.”
However, the success of True Lies failed to give the boost to Curtis’ career one might expect.
“Despite the success of True Lies, the triumph strangely didn’t transfer momentum into the next phase of Jamie Lee Curtis’ film career,” wrote David Grove, author of the biography Jamie Lee Curtis: Scream Queen.
“… By the mid-1990s, Curtis was entering a phase of her career where she was now being viewed more as a mother figure, an older actress, rather than a heroine.”
True Lies‘ popularity has endured since it is regarded as one of the top action movies of the 1990s.
