It looks like James Gunn’s DCU makeover will leave Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn deprived of a change that she heartily wanted. The Barbie actress stated her wish to witness the bond between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy in live-action. It is one of the most renowned romances in the comic books and the animated media and Robbie also wanted to watch it in the presently-dead DCEU.
Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was one of the fewest good things that occurred in DCEU. Many fans loved how she nailed the role and looked perfect in it. With the transition to DCU, it feels like the antiheroine might now face an unlucky fate in James Gunn’s universe.
What did Margot Robbie want for her character in the DCEU?
Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn made her debut with Suicide Squad after which she was also seen in Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad. Her performance was one of the countable good things in the first Suicide Squad movie and attracted widespread appreciation. However, she was not so lucky as the universe planned by Zack Snyder came to a quick end due to a series of bad choices.
In an interview with Comicbook.com, when the 33-year-old actress was asked about the possibility of watching the Harley Quinn-Poison Ivy romance in live-action, Robbie replied:
“I have been pushing for that for years. I cannot tell you how hard I’ve been pushing for that. I want it too.”
When she was asked about any potential casting choices for Poison Ivy, Margot Robbie didn’t name any particular actress but wanted a comic-accurate portrayal.
“Honestly, when I pictured, I always picture like Poison Ivy in the comics. I don’t really actually picture an actress doing it, but I agree, that would be so good.”
It can’t be denied that a romance between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy might also repeat the success of comic books and animation in live-action. But it is also noteworthy that James Gunn hasn’t confirmed anything about the future of Margot Robbie in the DCU. Now, with the departure of the former Justice League members, Robbie’s future in the universe is more uncertain than ever.
Will Margot Robbie stay in the DCU?
Recently it was reported by Variety that James Gunn is going to recast the entirety of the Justice League members in his new DCU. Although the role of Superman was already confirmed after David Corenswet was recast in place of Henry Cavill, the update presented a clearer future for the other actors.
According to Gunn, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, John Cena’s Peacemaker, and the latest Blue Beetle by Xolo Maridueña are some of the names that will return in the universe. Additionally, some actors like Jason Momoa might also take up some other character.
But with Margot Robbie’s popularity as Harley Quinn, it can’t be assured that she will surely be recast. The Babylon star’s latest success in the Greta Gerwig hit might also play a big role in ensuring her stay.
