The feud and legal battle between former married couple Amber Heard and Johnny Depp was under high public scrutiny. The defamation trial between the two actors had a public trial last year, which even became the subject of a Netflix documentary. The case saw overwhelming conversations on social media with people taking sides.
Before all the noise and feuds, the mention of each other’s names in public only elicited fun responses from the actors. In an old interview of Amber Heard with talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel, she plants a kiss on the host saying that it was a message from her husband at the time, Johnny Depp. She was referring to an ongoing gag between Depp and Kimmel.
Why Did Amber Heard Kiss Jimmy Kimmel On Television?
Before the former couple’s public trial and divorce, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were quite beloved. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel on his talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Amber Heard made an appearance while promoting her film The Danish Girl in 2015. She gave a kiss to Kimmel, saying that she had a message for him.
The kiss was a reference to a running gag of Johnny Depp kissing Kimmel live a few times when he had come to promote his films. The gag started when Depp did it while promoting the film The Lone Ranger, and then did it again while promoting the sci-fi drama Transcendence.
To Amber Heard’s kiss, Jimmy Kimmel responded with,
“A message from your husband Johnny Depp. I have kissed him a few times…I don’t want to make you jealous, listen, it’s just a friendly thing…There’s nothing going on.”
Kimmel had jokingly accused Depp of cheating on him after his marriage to Amber Heard, which prompted the Pirates of the Caribbean actor to plant a kiss on him again.
Amber Heard And Johnny Depp’s Divorce
Amber Heard and Johnny Depp met when they starred in The Rum Diary and began dating in 2012. The couple married in 2015 in a private ceremony, with it being Depp’s second and Heard’s first marriage. The actress filed for divorce in 2016 and accused Depp of being abusive in the relationship, which Depp refuted.
Their divorce was settled in 2017, with Depp paying $7 million to Heard which was to be donated to the American Civil Liberties Union and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. The settlement also included an NDA which prevented both from talking about their relationship in public.
However, in 2018, Heard wrote an article where she spoke about her experience as a domestic abuse survivor. Depp was also dealing with a lawsuit against the British tabloid The Sun, which brought to the forefront the allegations against the actor, which he lost. The loss brought had a lasting effect on the actor’s public image.
Depp had to resign from the Fantastic Beasts franchise upon the studio’s request and was also ostracized from Hollywood. He filed a defamation lawsuit against Heard after her article and the trial occurred in 2022. The trial was a public event, with the proceedings being livestreamed on the internet. The trial brought up topics of domestic violence and victimization among others.
