Before Heard was considered for the role, Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley were the frontrunners for the role of Chenault. As per the reports, Heard wrote a lot of letters to the director and the producer of the movie because she was a fan of Hunter S. Thompson who had written the book back in 1998.
In an interview with DailyMail, Amber Heard revealed that she wanted the role of Chenault quite desperately because she had read the book and was a fan of the literature. Stating that she had a more personal connection to the lead female character, Heard took the role but also revealed that she had respect for Scarlett Johansson.
“I auditioned and read many times, wrote letters to the producers and the director, I really had to work for this part. As an avid reader and fan of Hunter S. Thompson, I did have something to offer to the role of Chenault that came from the literature.”
She further continued,
“I felt a connection to the role. In regards to Scarlett Johansson, I think she is a good actress and I respect her, and her choices and her work quite a bit.”
With Johansson getting replaced by Amber Heard, this marked the first film when Johnny Depp and his would-be ex-wife met.

Portraying the two leads slowly falling in love over the course of the film, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard met on the sets while making this film. Over the months, they started dating and officially became a couple in 2012 after Depp separated from his longtime girlfriend Vanessa Paradis.
Dating for 3 years, the duo married in 2015 and then had a very public and messy divorce in 2017, with allegations of abuse and defense from both sides. The case was reignited in 2019 when Depp sued Amber Heard for public defamation and the Depp-Heard defamation trial took place. And the rest, as we all know, is history.
