The fear of clowns, also known as coulrophobia, seems pretty prevalent among major celebs in the realm of entertainment, including Johnny Depp, Diddy, and Robert Pattinson. Pattinson, who donned the cape of Batman back in 2022, spoke about the incident that ignited his phobia, claiming while visiting the circus as a kid, he witnessed a clown die in a car explosion.

This would reasonably explain his fear of clowns, however, it seems the traumatic backstory might not be based on true events, as Pattinson spilled the beans after being confronted by Zoë Kravitz.

Robert Pattinson Came Clean About the Truth to Zoë Kravitz

During their press tour ahead of The Batman‘s release, the traumatic experience that Robert Pattinson alleged back in the early 2010s was addressed by the actor. Zoë Kravitz, who seemed unaware of the story, was bewildered after the interviewer brought up the alleged story, which led to the Divergent Star confronting Pattinson. On asked about the legitimacy of the clown car incident, the Twilight Star hilariously responded, “I have trouble distinguishing fact from fiction”, implying that the story was indeed a hoax.

But before coming clean to Zoë Kravitz, the actor did once admit that there was no merit to the story while revealing his motives behind making this all up.

Robert Pattinson Revealed His Reasoning Behind Making Up This Bizarre Story

Reflecting on the fake story he crafted back in the 2010s, Robert Pattinson revealed the reason he decided to make up the tragic backstory because he had nothing more “interesting to say”. During his appearance at the premiere of Water For Elephants in Germany, Pattinson joked that his lies came back to haunt him, stating,

“I said those things. But I actually made the whole thing up. It’s coming back to haunt me. I said it on some show. It was really early in the morning the day after the New York premiere. Someone asked me what my experience with the circus was and I was like, I have nothing interesting to say. I don’t know why I said that!”
