Lizzo sent the world of social media into a frenzy when she posted just days ago on her Instagram that she is quitting. Although the singer did not clarify what exactly was she quitting, fans and haters took it as her quitting music and the music industry for good following the many lawsuits lodged against her.
As her post went viral, fans were disheartened while her haters rejoiced. Meanwhile, the lawyer representing the three dancers suing her went on to state that it was just another PR stunt by the Grammy winner. And proving him right is Lizzo’s recent statement explaining that she isn’t going anywhere.
Lizzo is NOT Quitting Music After All
Since last year, Lizzo has been busy battling the clout of lawsuits and the backlash she has been receiving following them. Last year, three of her backup dancers accused her of a hostile work environment including s*xual harassment (via Variety). Following the lawsuit was another one filed by a fashion designer, who accused her of bullying, harassment, and even racial discrimination (via Independent).
And so, ever since then, the Grammy-winning singer has been at the receiving end of several hate campaigns by fans and critics. On 31 March, Lizzo posted on Instagram that she would be quitting, prompting many to decipher it as her decision to leave social media and music.
But now in a new video on Instagram, she clarified what her I quit statement meant,
“I wanted to make this video because I just need to clarify when I say ‘I quit,’ I mean I quit giving any negative energy attention… What I’m not going to quit is the joy of my life, which is making music and connecting to people. And I know I’m not alone. In no way shape or form am I the only person experiencing that negative voice that’s louder than the positive.”
While some supported her in the comments, others berated her and stated how she’d been proving the lawyer right who stated her I quit message was just a PR stunt.
Lawyer Claimed Lizzo’s “I quit” Message is Just a Publicity Stunt
While critics rejoiced, the lawyer representing the three backup dancers who accused Lizzo of harassment had harsher words to say. Ron Zambrano, the Los Angeles-situated attorney, remarked to Entertainment Weekly,
“It’s a joke that Lizzo would say she is being bullied by the internet when she should instead be taking an honest look at herself. Her latest post is just another outburst seeking attention and trying to deflect from her own failings as she continues to blame everyone else for the predicament she is in. Lizzo’s legal and public relations strategy is a failure, so she is desperately trying to play the victim.”
