Just ask Rob Lowe, who just discovered himself in a sticky situation after mistakenly congratulating Bradley Cooper on having won the Golden Globe. Actually, the Unstable star believed he was chatting with Robert Downey Jr.
Recently, Cooper lost to Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of Robert Oppenheimer at the 81st Golden Globe Awards (January 7). For his role as famed composer Leonard Bernstein in the biopic Maestro, Cooper was nominated. But it does not seem like luck was in his favor, as Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer took home the Best Actor and Best Director awards.
Bradley Cooper Mistakenly Got a Text That Turned Into a Headline-Worthy Mix-Up
Picture this: Rob Lowe, best known for The Outsiders, chooses to send his close friend Robert Downey Jr. his congratulations on his Golden Globe win. Buzzing with excitement, the former types away rapidly, blissfully unaware of the fact that he’s about to make an awful technological faux pas. The recipient appeared to be Bradley Cooper, the unwitting victim of a text-message catastrophe.
Lowe recently admitted on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that he accidentally texted the Maestro star to congratulate him on winning a Golden Globe, mistaking it for a text intended for Downey Jr. He recalled:
“Downey does this amazing acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, and I’m so excited for him so I text him, ‘So glad you won. That is the most beautiful acceptance speech I’ve heard in a long time. Boy, do you deserve it’. I hit it and I realize, ‘Oh s*it. I just sent that to Bradley Cooper’.”
The incident was somewhat strange because Cooper, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for Maestro, lost to Cillian Murphy in the motion picture drama category for Best Actor. Downey Jr. received the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
Lowe further added:
“I said, ‘No, no, I meant that for Robert Downey Jr’. Now that’s even worse! I made the guy feel worse! It was terrible.”
This was definitely a punch to the ego! Poor Cooper must have experienced equal parts of confusion, awkwardness, and embarrassment.
Bradley Cooper’s ‘Six Years’ of Learning for his Maestro Role
While Bradley Cooper’s physical transformation into the late great conductor Leonard Bernstein has received most of the attention surrounding his Maestro film thus far, some may be surprised by his preparation for the role. At a Los Angeles film screening, the actor revealed that he spent an incredible six years learning how to conduct a little over six minutes of music in the style of Bernstein. This was so that he could capture a key live scene for Maestro.
According to IndieWire, the actor, 49, stated this during the event.
“That scene I was so worried about because we did it live. That was the London Symphony Orchestra. I was recorded live. I had to conduct them. And I spent six years learning how to conduct six minutes and 21 seconds of music.”
Maestro, the 129-minute flick, was listed among the top 10 films of 2023 by the American Film Institute and the National Board of Review after earning positive reviews from critics. It is also nominated for four Golden Globe Awards.
Even though Christopher Nolan is this year’s Golden Globe darling, Cooper seems to have had to wait for a while longer to win for his work.
Maestro is streaming on Netflix, while Oppenheimer can be rented on Apple TV.
