Although George Lucas himself came up with the concept for this iconic figure, renowned makeup artist Stuart Freeborn created and perfected his look. After a long creation process marked by countless redesigns, Yoda slowly but surely became the two-foot tall creature we know and love today, complete with his green skin, long elfin ears, claws, and foam rubber skin.

One of the biggest mysteries in the Star Wars saga is “Where does Yoda come from?” Lucasfilm has purposely kept Yoda’s homeworld and species a secret, even though almost every species, planet, and language from the saga has been listed in official reference materials. According to George Lucas, “he’s a mystery character” with “no background.”

In an interview, Lucas said, “The truth about Yoda is, in the original movie, Obi-Wan went to the very end of the film and Yoda did not exist. I realized that when I came to the end battle, that Obi-Wan had nothing to do, but still be around and watch the battle like Princess Leia.”

And then in the next film, he basically sat and taught Luke how to use the force and things. I felt that his character had become so strong. The way Alec Guinness had presented it, that I really could not do that. He was too noble, so I had to kill him off. When I got to the second movie, I could do certain things by having him come back as a ghost from the force. But I couldn’t do everything. I needed a physical body there to do things and so I created Yoda, who was two feet tall, large with green ears, but to be very honest, I never really figured out, where he came from, and what his species is called, doesn’t even have a name. So he’s a mystery character,” Lucas continued.

Large ears and a wrinkled face were among Yoda’s distinctive traits that made him instantly recognized. Yoda’s inclusion in the Star Wars saga was a creative decision made by George Lucas and the movie-makers and it was not linked to Obi-Wan Kenobi’s death. Both characters have made individual contributions to the Star Wars narrative and have remained significant personalities in the mythology of the franchise.
