The movie addresses several tough subjects like grief and mental illness. David O. Russell’s son has a history of bipolar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and that inspired many aspects of the movie. At one point, Robert De Niro teared up on the sets of the movie thinking about the director’s emotional connection with the movie.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director David O. Russell told host Katie Couric that Hollywood legend Robert De Niro got emotional on the sets of the movie,

“I thought he was having hay fever, then I realized he was having an emotional reaction and I sat there and watched Robert De Niro cry for 10 minutes and I said, ‘Wow he’s really connecting with this material and this would be beautiful thing if it could work out because I think his heart would be there’ and it is there.”

De Niro explained that he got emotional when he realized what David O. Russell is going through while filming the movie, given that the movie tackles some disorders that O. Russell’s son has been through.

Bipolar Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder are acknowledged throughout Silver Linings Playbook. David O. Russell’s son suffers from these disorders and the director made the movie keeping his son in mind,

“More importantly, I wanted to do it because it was an opportunity to make a movie about, in a way, matters that relate to my son. Matters that have felt challenging to him. To bring those challenges to light in a movie and give them a story, and with love, is really a healing thing for him and the whole family. You know, my son has struggled with bi-polarity and OCD, so, to do it in a movie is really. You know, there was always ‘Dad’s movie is over here,’ then there was him and his struggles over there. And now they’re together, and that’s a nice thing to have it be part of a story.”

David O. Russell’s son also had a brief cameo in Silver Linings Playbook. The kid that rings the doorbell and is chased away by Robert De Niro’s character is actually David O. Russell’s son. Silver Linings Playbook received eight Academy Award nominations and won one Oscar. Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role in the movie.
