We might see the battle for superhero supremacy hitting the top. James Gunn, the architect of DC’s revamped cinematic universe, has most probably set his sights on a powerful duo to challenge Kevin Feige’s MCU dominance. Gunn’s strategic move to tap into the visionary duo’s talents signifies a potential game-changer, as he seeks to infuse the DCU with fresh energy and innovation.
Armed with a trump card that could tip the scales, Gunn aims to bring the dynamic filmmaking duo, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, into the DCU fold. Known for their success in the animated realm with Spider-Verse, these producers have captured the imagination of audiences with their unique storytelling approach.
James Gunn Eyes on Phil Lord and Chris Miller
Last year, James Gunn and Peter Safran announced the launching of the all-new, all-different DCU. Amid DCEU’s box office struggle, ‘Superhero fatigue,’ past fumbles all led to the studio’s hard days. Fans believe that James Gunn can revive the DC Universe and make DC movies and shows more consistent, though he has the difficult task of building a heavily damaged brand back up.
At a time when Kevin Feige’s MCU is gearing up with movies like Deadpool & Wolverine, Captain America: Brave New World or The Fantastic Four, DCU is ready to compete with Superman: Legacy which is their first movie in the new slate, and The Batman 2.
James Gunn recently in his Threads account replied to a fan who asked him if he wants to have Phil Lord and Chris Miller on a DCU project. Lord and Miller is best known for their work on the Spider-Verse franchise, and James Gunn once picked 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse as his favorite superhero movie.
To the fan’s query, Gunn was seen quite enthusiastic about the pair. He said: “I saw them yesterday. I should have asked.“
Lord and Miller won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). If Gunn becomes able to pull in the Oscar-winning duo, then it might change a whole new dimension, and the battle of Superhero movie supremacy between MCU and DCU could see a higher level.
Phil Lord And Christopher Miller Left The Flash Project For This Reason
In 2015, DC Studio wanted The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to pen a treatment for The Flash. However, there were some creative differences between them and the studio.
While the duo kept quiet about their endeavor, they did admit that they had a time travel narrative in mind. It appeared to be more gastronomic than multiversal, though.
“It did involve time travel, but it was not a multiversal story. So I think it is safe to say that this is its own unique thing,” Miller told The Hollywood Reporter. “There are definitely some things that were in the trailers that I’ve seen that were were similar to things that are in our treatment, but I’m certain that, from what I know now of the story, it seems quite different from what we had.”
Added Lord: “A lot of our treatment was about how much food he had to consume.”
In 2019, the studio hired It and It Chapter Two filmmaker, Andy Muschietti, to direct The Flash using a screenplay written by Christina Hodson.
