Ever since James Gunn was crowned one of the two CEOs and handed over the reins of the DC Universe, everything seems to be changing and going in a completely unexpected direction than what fans were expecting.
While the Guardians of the Galaxy saga helmer is working on his next DC film that would kickstart his DC Universe reboot, Superman: Legacy, other masterpieces are reportedly getting axed as a consequence of the same.
These “other masterpieces” notably include one of the most-watched TV series by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television, Superman & Lois, which concluded the airing of its season 3 on The CW last year in July 2023.
However, the superhit television series will soon be facing its untimely end after the airing of its season 4 — notably, much to fans’ disapproval — all because James Gunn’s David Corenswet starrer reboot film would be hitting the marketplace soon.
Superman & Lois Is Getting Axed Because Of James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy
To say that Superman & Lois is one of the best-ever television series from DC Entertainment wouldn’t be an understatement considering the massive fan approval it received from both critics and general audiences alike. This is more than enough reason for why it shouldn’t be scrapped.
However, Warner Bros. reportedly seems to be looking at this situation from a completely different perspective. Even though the series season 3 garnered a whopping 819,000 average viewership from its audience, Warner Bros. is still reportedly axing the CW show after season 4 (via TheWrap).
The reason behind this is considerably simple if viewed from Warner Bros.’s point of view: James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy would soon be hitting the audiences, and two Superman shows just can’t be in the marketplace at the same time.
As CW’s president of entertainment, Brad Schwartz told TheWrap:
“They [Warner Bros.] don’t want a competing Superman product [Superman & Lois] in the marketplace.”
Because of this very reason, the primetime slot that Superman & Lois held on broadcast television will notably be emptied after the fourth and last season of the series comprising ten episodes finishes its airing in 2024, as reported by Variety.
Fans Are Not Happy With Superman & Lois Getting Canceled
Superman & Lois was one of the most commended shows by DC Entertainment. With a stunning 83% rating on the Tomatometer with 80% of audiences liking it, the Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch starrer series could’ve very well become a big bucks earner for Warner Bros.
However, Warner Bros. has decided to put an end to it after season 4, once and for all. While fans were already not okay with this news before, this recent revelation about James Gunn‘s Superman: Legacy being the reason why the series was scrapped has further enraged fans.
Taking to X, they’re expressing their disapproval over this decision of Warner Bros.:
WTF WB? Are you kidding me Superman & Lois is one of the best modern Superman live action takes in years. pic.twitter.com/eKrKObcHBr

Once again WB canceling a Superman they know everyone loves in order to make room for a Superman MAYBE some people will like. WB really hates Superman

Meanwhile Batman has two films and a semi-third film with the Joker films. This makes no sense.

Best Superman we've ever had, such a sad outcome

The Flash show was on the air while the Flash was in theaters. Two different Flashes at the same time

Bitsie and Tyler are Grade A versions of Lois and Clark. Top, top iterations. They both nail the roles. I reckon Jimmy Pistol is afraid and doesn't want his versions to be compared to the best.

Stupid. You get double the brand promotion with Superman. WB makes the dumbest decisions ever, my god.

Considering just how much fans are against this decision, James Gunn should probably try to change WB executives’ minds and have the CW series continue to thrive in the industry. If not, then he should make sure to make Superman: Legacy a masterpiece that could make fans forget about the heartbreak of losing Superman & Lois.
The CW series Superman & Lois is available to be streamed on Prime Video, while James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy is set to hit the theatres next year, by the 11th of July, 2025.
