James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy is one of the most hotly anticipated projects as it will reset the DCU. As a result, several aspects of the film from its casting choices to plot threads have been the subject of intense speculation among fans. The film is nearing the start of production and a new rumor suggests that Gunn has now altered one of its rumored plot points.
Initially, it was reported that Superman: Legacy would feature the titular superhero dealing with a conflict in the Middle East. However, a new report from insider Grace Randolph now hints that the supposed Middle East plot point has been changed with Eastern Europe now set to take its place. Here is what Randolph said and why Gunn’s film would be better off with the rumored change.
James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy Reportedly Changed Controversial Plot Point
James Gunn‘s Superman: Legacy is expected to start production soon. However, the film has been in the news for the reported exit of actor Bassem Youssef. Meanwhile, insider Grace Randolph has now revealed that an important plot point from the film has reportedly been altered. Randolph recently took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and stated the following:
I hear a certain #DC movie has switched its conflict from the Middle East to Eastern Europe…
— Grace Randolph (@GraceRandolph) February 16, 2024
Randolph’s tweet references Superman: Legacy which is the only DCU project currently close to starting production. Meanwhile, Randolph was one of the insiders who claimed that Superman: Legacy would feature a plot point set in the Middle East. However, it now seems that Randolph has claimed the plot point has been changed to be set in Eastern Europe.
Assuming, Randolph’s claims are correct, Gunn most likely dodged a bullet by making the supposed change to the film’s script. A plot thread involving a character like Superman, the embodiment of the “American Way,” would have been highly controversial in the current climate. Moreover, the plot thread might have come off as tone-deaf or insensitive given the Israel–Hamas war in the Middle East.
Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice also featured a similar scene where Superman saves Lois Lane from terrorists in the Middle East. Hence, for reasons related to real-world politics and originality Gunn’s Superman: Legacy narrowly avoided a major controversy by allegedly changing the Middle East to Eastern Europe in its script.
Fans Remain Skeptical of Grace Randolph’s Superman: Legacy Claims
Despite Randolph’s claim regarding the rumored change in the Superman: Legacy script, fans remain unconvinced by the scooper’s report. Earlier, Gunn himself took to Instagram to debunk the rumors of the Middle East conflict plot point, which Randolph had initially reported. As a result, the skepticism among fans regarding Randolph’s recent claim about the film is understandable.
Here is what fans are saying about the rumored change on X.
Grace Randolph can’t ‘reveal’ anything cuz she’s not a reliable source of information.

"Revealed" is a heavy word bc she's usually wrong. "Theorised", maybe

jumping from one backlash to another …. definitely not a good sign

If true a smart move

While most fans expressed doubts over the report’s authenticity, some fans thought it was a smart move from Gunn to change the Middle East set plot point to take place in Eastern Europe. However, a small section of fans opined that changing the location of the said plot point would not save the film from controversy.
Superman: Legacy is set to star David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Superman and Lois Lane. They will be joined by Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The film is expected to start principal photography in March 2024 and is slated to release on July 11, 2025.
