Jake Gyllenhaal wishes to work with Maggie Gyllenhaal

The ace actress Maggie Gyllenhaal made her directorial debut in 2021 with the Oscar-nominated film The Lost Daughter. It is a psychological drama film based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Elena Ferrante. Nightcrawler actor Jake Gyllenhaal shared in an interview with People that he would be privileged to be directed by his sister.

“We talk all the time, and we rely on each other. She sees me for all of my stuff and she can bring that out in me. And I think I would show her vulnerability, probably, I haven’t been able to do onscreen and otherwise, because I trust her and I love her.”

The siblings, Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal have worked together onscreen in the film Donnie Darko. They have also worked in two other films directed by their father, Stephen Gyllenhaal, which are A Dangerous Woman and Homegrown. The siblings have however never worked together behind the camera.

Jake Gyllenhaal shared about a project in development under his sister’s direction. He revealed in a conversation with InStyle magazine

“We actually talk about it more now than ever, and I would love to work with her. We are working together on something right now, just creatively, not as actors, which I’m enjoying so much. I don’t think I can say yet. But, she’s an incredible writer, and she’s an incredible filmmaker, and I’ve known that for a long time. And now the world knows it.”

Jake Gyllenhaal is the son of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner.

Jake Gyllenhaal talked about his writing and directing skills

Being a part of the talented Gyllenhaal family, Jake Gyllenhaal has also developed a good sense of writing and direction. He showcased his skills when he revised the script of Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners and shot some scenes for Michael Bay’s film Ambulance. The actor also produced Antoine Fuqua’s film The Guilty, amid the COVID pandemic. He was also the producer of Broadway Tony contenders Sea Wall/I Love and Slave Play.

The actor appreciated his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal for her Oscar-nominated film The Lost Daughter. In a conversation with IndieWire, she said,

“It was definitely a moment of great pride and joy when she won the screenwriting award at Venice.” 

“We somehow found ourselves in the same business, having grown up with two parents who were incredible teachers in storytelling [who] were also, admittedly, competitive with each other. So that behavior was part of the model we were shown.”
