Narrating the tale of an unconventional romance between a 40-year-old single mother Solène Marchand and a 24-year-old boy bander Hayes Campbell, the movie takes Hollywood by storm.
However, while the movie created quite a buzz on social media, netizens seemingly targeted Anne Hathaway for her decision to engage in an age-gap romance. After watching Hathaway in several critically acclaimed projects, people are finding it difficult to accept the actress in such roles. But the star seems unfazed by the hurtful accusations online.
Anne Hathaway’s Age-Gap Romance With Nicholas Galitzine
Based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Robinne Lee, The Idea of You starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine took Hollywood by storm. Having a strong rom-com pedigree, the film directed by Michael Showalter narrates the tale of romance between a 40-year-old single mother Solène Marchand and a 24-year-old boy bander Hayes Campbell.
Previously, it was rumored that The Idea of You was based on Harry Styles fanfiction. But it has been confirmed that although Nicholas Galitzine’s character Hayes is inspired by the former One Direction member; neither the movie nor the novel has anything to do with Styles’ fanfiction. However, while certain confusions surrounding the project were clarified, people seemed a bit surprised by Anne Hathaway‘s involvement in the movie.
Popularly known for skimming through projects and often appearing in critically acclaimed films like The Princess Diaries, The Devil Wears Prada, and Les Misérables, Anne Hathaway seemingly surprised fans with her involvement in The Idea of You. Given that Hathaway plays the role of the single mother who develops a romantic bond with the 24-year-old singer, fans appeared to target the actress with mean comments for her choice of film.
Anne Hathaway is Unfazed By the Age-Gap Accusations
Starring in a movie that dons a 19-year age gap between the characters, with pride, Oscar winner Anne Hathaway gets surprisingly slammed by netizens. As the teaser released in December 2023 featured a shirtless Nicholas Galitzine cradling Hathaway on lounge chairs, fans lost their minds to witness the actress in such a movie, given her illustrious filmography.
Nonetheless, despite being targeted online and facing hurtful accusations for her out-of-the-box role, Anne Hathaway appears calm and composed. Totally unfazed by people’s opinions on her character and choice of project, the actress appeared at The Idea Of You Red Carpet premiere at SXSW 2024. Even at the film’s SXSW world premiere, as the crowd noticed a light touch of the hands between Hathaway and Galitzine, they completely lost it.
Witnessing the uproar from people, even reporters attacked Anne Hathaway with the curious question of why she particularly chose this movie. Although the actress turned a blind eye to online comments, she couldn’t sideline reporter’s questions at SXSW. Therefore, finally addressing the question and people’s concern about her appearance in an age-gap romance, Hathaway offered a suitable response.
“Why this movie?” Reporter asked.
“I don’t want to be pigeonholed and don’t want to be placed in a box of what type of films I have to be making because of my age, gender, and because I won an Oscar. I want to have fun, dammit. It speaks to me.” Hathaway replied.
Shutting down hurtful accusations and targeted questions at once, Anne Hathaway’s response was hailed with claps and cheers from her fans.
The Idea of You will be available on Prime Video on May 2.
