In an interview with The Guardian, the 41-year-old actress shared that coming from a small town in New Zealand, she was surprised that everyone at the award ceremony seemed to know who she was. “I was just confused that everyone knew who I was,” she said before adding, “I was just some kid from a small town in New Zealand.”

She shared that while her parents had set her up “not to be disappointed” if she lost, they did not explain to her what they should do upon winning. And as she was not aware of the protocol after winning the award, she started walking back to her seat after receiving the golden statue.

As per norms, the winner is to go backstage for the photographs and further interviews for their victory. Paquin, who was only 11 at the time, however, recalled, “taking my trophy down the stairs and back to my seat.”

Paquin has also opened up about how she tried to hide her Oscar because she didn’t want her friends to perceive her differently after winning the prestigious award.
