Marvel fans eagerly awaited Madame Web, hoping it would restore faith in the franchise. However, the Dakota Johnson-led film failed to capture the expected magic. Since the release of this trailer, there has been a lot of talk about this movie, but it has failed to deliver.
Featuring a unique story about Madame Web and boasting an impressive cast of Dakota Johnson, Sidney Sweeney, and Emma Roberts, portraying various Spider characters, the movie had all the makings of a hit. But when Madame Web was released, this came as a shock to see it failing to make much of an impact at the box office.
Interestingly, Sidney Sweeney, who portrayed Julia Cornwall (the Spider-Woman variant), seems to be steering clear of the film’s box office struggles.
Sydney Sweeney Says ‘I was just hired as an actress’
Sydney Sweeney, The Euphoria star seems to be not much affected by the Marvel and Sony film Madame Web’s box office disappointment. She is unfazed. While opening up about Madame Web results, the actor said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
“I was just hired as an actress in it, so I was just along for the ride for whatever was going to happen.”
Sweeney herself joked about the film on Saturday Night Live saying “I am so happy to be here. My name is Sydney Sweeney. You might have seen me in Anyone But You or Euphoria,” she said.
“You definitely did not see me in Madame Web.”
Recently, Jimmy Kimmel, in his monologue at the Oscars, had a Madame Web dig.
“The people in this room somehow managed to come up with so many excellent films and memorable performances,” Kimmel said. “This night is full of enormous talent, and untold potential, but so was ‘Madame Web.’”
The film could only earn $42 million at the domestic box office as its worldwide gross ended under $100 million. It made only $96 million at the box office. (Via The Numbers)
How Did Dakota Johnson React to the Film’s Poor Run?
Allegedly, Dakota Johnson, known for her role in Fifty Shades Of Grey, is said to have left Sony dissatisfied with Madame Web’s lackluster performance. Reports suggest that her behavior during promotion, lack of support for the film, and public criticism of the Marvel movie contributed to her falling out with Sony and its executives.
After her experience in the superhero film, Dakota Johnson expressed reluctance to venture into a similar universe in the near future.
“I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now,” Johnson stated in an interview with Bustle. She went on to say,
“Sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it’s one thing and then as you’re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you’re like, ‘Wait, what?’ But it was a real learning experience, and of course it’s not nice to be a part of something that’s ripped to shreds, but I can’t say that I don’t understand.”
During her conversation with Bustle, the actress hinted at how the interference of the committee might have adversely affected her film.
