Bale explained,

“When there still was the Wall Street trading floors and everything, I went and visited, you know, all different levels of people at Wall Street. But the guys on the trading floor, when I arrived there before making the film… I got there and a bunch of ’em were going, “Oh, Patrick Bateman!” and patted me on the back and going, “Oh yeah, we love him!” And I was like… yeah, ironically, right?”

Bale continued,

“So it was always worrying, even back then. But you know, clearly, it’s a satire on capitalism in the ’80s, and as such is so bloody far-fetched and ridiculous that, you know, to me, I can’t help but think it’s hilarious.”

The Wall Street workers did not understand what he meant. Anyone who has read the book or seen the film would not appreciate Patrick’s despicable and malicious character. The actor was stunned by people’s reaction to Patrick Bateman’s character in the film.
