The actress who portrayed Gamora in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies has confirmed that she won’t be returning to the role. However, Saldaña is still a big fan of the Guardians and thinks the superhero team should carry on, even if director James Gunn isn’t involved.

Zoe Saldaña’s latest film, The Absence of Eden, hits theaters on April 12th. But fans are most curious about her future with Marvel, particularly Guardians of the Galaxy. With the release of Vol. 3 and director James Gunn‘s move to DC Studios, the franchise seemed to be reaching its end.

At the end of the film, there was a tantalizing tease of a new team, but fans were relieved to see that none of the original Guardians of the Galaxy members met their demise. Instead, they were seemingly just set aside from the main storyline for a while.

Saldaña recently discussed this on The Discourse podcast, indicating that her portrayal of the skilled assassin Gamora has likely come to an end, at least for the time being. “So far, I think she is [gone for good] for me,” she said in the interview. However, she left the door open for the character’s return, possibly through recasting or the multiverse’s possibilities.

This news comes after Dave Bautista‘s similar announcement regarding his character Drax. The Dune: Part Two star said that he’s open for more superhero roles in the MCU, DC, or any other similar projects. While he maintains a positive relationship with Marvel and Kevin Feige, he made it clear in an interview with Io9 that his “journey with Drax is over.”

Zoe Saldaña is also Optimistic About Star Trek

Despite leaving Gamora behind, Zoe Saldaña’s love for the Guardians remains strong. “I would think it would be a huge loss for Marvel if they didn’t find a way to bring back The Guardians of the Galaxy,” she stated in the podcast.

She praised the franchise’s unique blend of humor and space opera, crediting James Gunn’s signature style for its success. The Passaic native even declared herself a future audience member, eager to see the Guardians return to the big screen.

The podcast also talked about Saldaña’s part in the Star Trek reboot movies. Although it’s not clear if there will be a fourth movie, the actress is still hopeful.

She enjoyed working on the earlier films and mentioned that Paramount is trying to keep the series going, either with the original cast or with new ideas.

Saldaña leaving her role as Gamora might feel like a big change for the Guardians of the Galaxy, but it doesn’t mean the end of everything. Because the franchise is still loved by fans, Marvel might find a way to keep the Guardians going strong. Fans just have to wait and see what happens next for Star-Lord, Rocket, and the rest of the crew.
