James Gunn’s extensive plans for the first Chapter of DCU Gods & Monsters will commence with Creature Commandos, the first project to be released within the franchise. The animated series will follow a team of monsters assembled by Amanda Waller for black ops missions.
With DC’s renowned history of excellence in animated shows and movies, expectations have soared, particularly after the success of Marvel’s X-Men ’97. Gunn recently acknowledged the success of the Marvel show on Threads, as he reflected on his approach for the upcoming animated show under DCU.
James Gunn Won’t Follow X-Men ’97’s Approach For DCU Projects
James Gunn recently took to Threads to address a fan quarry about whether DC Studios would consider following the same approach as X-Men ’97 for Justice League Unlimited.
While the filmmaker praised the originality and authenticity of the Marvel animated series, he dismissed the notion of adopting a similar strategy for reviving Bruce Timm’s animated show.
“X-Men ‘97 is fun because it’s unique and not desperately trying to follow the trends of everything around it. So I’d rather just keep doing that.”
The filmmaker advocated for a creative approach that prioritizes individuality and staying true to the essence of the story or concept, rather than simply chasing after what’s popular or trendy. His stance seems promising for the upcoming animated series in DC Universe, Creature Commandos.
With the success of animated superhero series like Invincible and X-Men ’97, expectations are high for the DC animated series to offer compelling storytelling experiences that connect with viewers and distinguish themselves in the competitive animation industry.
J. M. DeMatteis Praised James Gunn’s Approach For DC Universe Projects
The comic writer and creator of Creature Commandos J. M. DeMatteis reflected on Gunn’s involvement in the animated adaptation of Creature Commandos. He shared that he had a “very nice conversation” with Gunn, but denied having any involvement in upcoming DCU projects.
“I’m not involved in any upcoming projects,” he said in a tweet. However, he also expressed his confidence in the DC head, assuring fans that the superhero franchise is in good hands, as he praised Gunn’s understanding and respect for the source material and its creators.
He took to X(Twitter) to share,
“Let me add that I think the DC TV/movie universe is in great hands with James Gunn. He’s a fan. He’s understands and respects the source material and the creators.”
The filmmaker, who has been busy with the first DCU film Superman, has recently shared an update about Creature Commandos, stating that he’s waiting for the first animated cuts of the series. “Animatics and all recording done. Waiting on the first animated cuts,” he said on Threads.
The team of monsters in the show will consist of Rick Flag Sr., Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus, Eric Frankenstein, the Bride of Frankenstein, G.I. Robot, and Weasel alongside Viola Davis, who will be reprising her role as Amanda Waller.
Creature Commandos is expected to be released in late 2024.
