While fans felt excitement after Deadpool 3 was confirmed to retain its R-rating, a project from James Gunn’s DC Universe might attempt to contend with the Marvel film’s gore and violence. The latest report on Frank Grillo’s Creature Commandos is that it is going to be a hard-R show.

Creature Commandos will follow a band of military superhumans composed of a human leader, a werewolf, a vampire, a gorgon, and Frankenstein’s monster. Indeed, this roster of characters definitely warrants that kind of TV rating.

Frank Grillo Teased Hard-R Rating For DCU’s Creature Commandos

Frank Grillo spoke with Screen Rant and discussed his version of Rick Flag Sr. The actor revealed the show is going to be very gory as well as dirty, seemingly surpassing the strong themes in Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 3. Grillo shared:

I think because this is a hard R — Creature Commandos is a hard R — it’s fun. When we were doing it, I think one day it was me and David Harbour recording, I was on the ground. I had to stop in the recording studio, I had to go on the ground and laugh, that’s how funny and filthy it is.”

Grillo’s future in the DC Universe may extend beyond the adult animated show, but he feels grateful for this present opportunity to work on Max’s Creature Commandos.

It’s amazing. I’m so happy to be a part of it. I think that is what’s different is this guy’s the boss, and he’s grizzled, white on the sides, and white in the beard, and I’m leaning into all that.”

The actor also revealed that James Gunn and the rest of the DC Studios team are planning more projects featuring Grillo’s character which may come out in the next few years.

James Gunn and Peter Safran over at DC have given me a great opportunity with Creature Commandos — and some other things that I’m not allowed to talk about — and I’m looking forward to the future with these guys in the DCU across the board. I think they’ve got some amazing stuff planned in the next year or two.”

A live-action version of the characters in Creature Commandos is also reportedly being prepared at the headquarters, so fans will have more to anticipate aside from the hard-R rating of the animated series.

James Gunn On Creature Commandos As DC Universe’s First Release

On Threads, James Gunn responded to the query on why Creature Commandos is being released first before Superman: Legacy. The director answered:

It was written and ready to go. We thought it worked well as an aperitif before the meal of SL.”

After the numerous box office failures from DCEU, the controversies that surrounded the franchise, and the gap between the last Snyderverse movie and the upcoming 2025’s Superman: Legacy, Creature Commandos would serve as a breath of fresh air and a good introduction to Gunn’s revamped DC Universe.

Creature Commandos will premiere in late 2024 via Max as part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
