After making her breakthrough with 2015’s The Witch, actress Anya Taylor-Joy gained mainstream recognition with her starring role in the Netflix miniseries The Queen’s Gambit. Ahead of the release of her 2022 film The Northman, Taylor-Joy spoke with Letterboxd, where she discussed her taste in films.

During the interview, Taylor-Joy revealed that she loves watching the sci-fi film Arrival, starring Jeremy Renner and Amy Adams, especially when she feels depressed.

“I’ll put on Arrival if I’m feeling very depressed about the state of the world. I love that film. I think its message is incredible.”

Taylor-Joy made the above statement about the Denis Villeneuve-directed 2016 film, which received eight nominations at the 89th Academy Awards. Arrival also grossed $203.4 million at the global box office. Incidentally, Taylor-Joy would go on to work with Villeneuve on another critically acclaimed sci-fi film, appearing in a cameo in 2024’s Dune: Part Two.

Aside from her love for Arrival, Taylor-Joy stated that she also enjoyed watching the 2000 comedy-drama Almost Famous, starring Kate Hudson. Meanwhile, the actress added that the Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise-led Interview with the Vampire was also one of her favorite films.

During the same interview, Taylor-Joy was also asked about her love for screwball rom-coms, especially from the 1930s and 1940s. Taylor-Joy admitted that she loved 1938’s Bringing Up Baby, before speaking about her affection for the subgenre.

“I think it’s when I feel… I’m a creative, I have a lot of feelings. And whenever I need comforting I tend to go for those kinds of movies. I go for movies in the ’30s and ’40s.”

Taylor-Joy made the above statement, explaining why she loves screwball rom-coms. At the same time, the 27-year-old actress also revealed that she wanted to star in a film from the subgenre. Taylor-Joy stated that she enjoyed being in creatively challenging situations and starring in a screwball rom-com would present her with a similar opportunity.

Anya Taylor-Joy will be next seen in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic action adventure film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, taking over the titular role from Charlize Theron. The film is currently slated to be released on May 23, 2024.
