Pirates of the Caribbean 6 discussions are mostly centered around the potential return of Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, despite the producer confirming it as a reboot project. Disney dropped Depp from the role after the actor was accused of domestic violence. However, the producer of the films, Jerry Bruckheimer, always supported the actor and advocated for his return to the role. He once again reiterated his wish during a recent interview.

Bruckheimer shared last year that he would like to potentially bring back Depp to a sequel film in the franchise. In his most recent comments, he shared that he would have the Donnie Brasco actor back if it were up to him.

When Amber Heard accused Johnny Depp of domestic abuse, Disney took no time in severing ties with the actor. He was supposed to film a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film at the time. The studio’s unfair treatment of the Alice in Wonderland actor became widely discussed during the Depp v. Heard trial in 2022. The trial turned the public opinion largely in favor of the actor.

Disney’s name was dragged into the trial when Depp stated that he had no intention of reviving his association with Disney. He shared that the studio removed him from the franchise before a verdict was reached in Heard’s case against him. While Disney treated the Edward Scissorhands actor unfairly, producer Jerry Bruckheimer always wanted him back in the role.

Speaking to THR in December 2022, Bruckheimer shared that he would “love to have him in the [sixth] movie.” He added that Depp is a terrific actor and shared that it was “unfortunate that personal lives creep into everything we do.” Bruckheimer once again shared his desire to bring Depp back during another interview with ET in March 2023.

In his most recent interview with ET, Bruckheimer has confirmed that if it were up to him, he would get Depp back on board. He shared that he has had conversations with the actor. He added that fans will have to wait to see what happens in that regard. Bruckheimer told ET:

If it was up to me, of course. I love having Depp. He’s a great actor and good friend… I’ve certainly spoken to him, but we’ll see what happens.

While Johnny Depp would not be jumping at the opportunity to work with Disney again, he has left a door open for his return as Jack Sparrow. An insider source told PEOPLE that he would consider returning to a project “if it’s the right project.” However, the current Pirates project in development will be a complete reboot.

While promoting The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare in March, Bruckheimer shared with ComicBook.com that the Pirates of the Caribbean is set for a complete reboot. He shared that the reboot would be an easier option since they didn’t have to wait for “certain actors.” Bruckheimer shared with ComicBook.com:

But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.

Rumors suggest that the cast for the Pirates reboot will consist of mostly youngsters. Unconfirmed reports earlier suggested that Ayo Edebiri of The Bear fame was eyed for the female lead in a Pirates film. Most recently, The DisInsider reported that Austin Butler of Dune 2 fame will play the lead in the new film.
