Johnny Depp’s legal conflict with his ex Amber Heard has almost derailed his glorious Hollywood career. The actor appeared in French filmmaker Maïwenn’s historical romance drama, Jeanne du Barry, alongside the director who played the title character.
Earlier this month, in an interview with The Independent, Maïwenn commented on working with Depp in the movie. However, she claimed that the outlet had twisted her words, keeping the actor in a bad light in the headline. Now, she clarified her comment on the Pirates of the Caribbean star.
Maïwenn Clarified her Comments On Johnny Depp
Maïwenn revealed that he was saddened and concerned after her interview was twisted to explicitly reveal a different meaning. It has cast a shadow of negativity on Johnny Depp and his reputation. In a chat with Variety, the director and Depp’s co-star explained why she used the word “scary” in her previous interview.
“When I made a remark about Johnny being ‘scary,’ I was talking about his charisma, his notoriety, his star status, etc. [I] was shocked when I discovered that the newspaper had headlined that ‘The crew were afraid of [Johnny Depp]’ because written like that, and without its context and subtleties, it absolutely no longer means the same thing. The journalist did not want to grasp the subtlety of my words.”
The director went on to add:
“I would like to make things very clear: Johnny is ‘scary’ in the sense that his charisma and his status as ‘king’ is impressive. I should have used the word ‘impressive’ if I had known [the writer] Charlotte O’Sullivan would use my words in such a malicious way.”
Of course, Depp has had a marvelous career to his credit. Beyond that, he is known for picking up eccentric roles, which include the iconic Tim Burton movie, Edward Scissorhands.
What Did Maïwenn Say During Her The Independent Interview?
Maïwenn was reflecting on her experience working with Depp in the interview with The Independent. After admitting that she did cut some lines from Depp’s dialogue, the actor/director/writer said that it was difficult to shoot with the Hollywood megastar. “I have to be honest. It’s difficult to shoot with him…” she told the outlet.
“All the crew were scared because he has a different kind of humour and we didn’t know if he was going to be on time, or if he was going to be OK to say his lines… I mean, even if he was there on set, on time, the crew were afraid of him.”
Adding on Depp, who played Louis XV in the movie, Maïwenn said:
“There’s been no normal relationship since the shoot. Johnny, for me, is a huge genius, but he’s in another world. I cannot communicate with him.”
Of course, for the director, Depp was a big find. Maïwenn has been a fan of the actor since she discovered him in John Waters’ Cry-Baby when she was just 14 years old. The director further revealed that she watched the movie three times. Maïwenn’s clarification justified her previous interview, and she has been grateful for the actor to be a part of her movie.
Jeanne du Barry is showing in select theaters.
