Billy Dee Williams’s Lando Calrissian is iconic, to say the least. The actor brought a level of flair and charm to the smuggler, playing the role many times in the Star Wars franchise. While there is no way to replicate how iconic his performance was, Donald Glover managed to add his own essence to the character when he played a younger version of him in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
While the 2018 film did not do that well with audiences, Calrissian’s character came out soaring and Glover managed to bag a solo project. Since then, however, there have been many speedbumps that have hampered its production. That was, until now.
What was earlier going to be a series, is now a movie which has gone into production. Fans of the character could not be more excited, although, they wonder if the older version of him would make his way into the film. Williams spoke on exactly this during a recent interview.
Will Billy Dee Williams Return As Lando?
Recently, Billy Dee Williams gave an interview with Radio Times, where he was asked to comment on the upcoming Lando Calrissian film starring Donald Glover. More specifically, he talked about if he would be starring in the film at some point, playing the older version of the character. His answer was extremely blunt and honest.
“Pay me a lot of money and I’ll sell my soul.” said Williams about if he would come back to play Lando again.
The actor stated that if he was paid the right amount, he would pretty much do anything, including coming back to play the role of Lando in the new Glover film. He also mentioned that there is only one authentic version of the character, his own.
Having spent so much time crafting Calrissian into the icon that he has become, it is safe to say that Williams holds him close to his heart.
Billy Dee Williams Trusts Donald Glover With Lando
Billy Dee Williams then went on to talk about his feelings on Donald Glover taking over his iconic role as Lando Calrissian. It would seem that the actor has nothing but positive things to say to him. He started by saying that Glover could do anything he wanted to do with the character.
He is appealing to a whole new generation, so Williams believes that he has the right to do what he needs to, to get audiences attached to the character.
“He’s part of a whole new generation. He’ll create whatever he needs to create, to bring appeal to the character. He’s a very talented young lad and very imaginative. I mean, it’s not for me to say what he should do with the character at this stage.” He went on, “I took care of the 20th century, now he’s got to take care of the 21st.”
Williams also added that he believes Glover to be extremely talented as an actor and trusts his capabilities. Not thinking it to be his place to tell the Mr. and Mrs. Smith actor what to do with Lando, he will let him decide what he thinks is best for the smuggler.
