While missing out on two iconic characters of the likes of Superman and Geralt of Rivia was a big blow for both fans and Cavill, Henry Cavill is up and running in no time. Following his reunion with Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn, with whom he previously worked on the 2007 fantasy Stardust, Cavill has nothing but positive to say about the new chapter of his career.
Even though Argylle is far from Vaughn and Cavill’s finest works, the MOS Star’s experience in the peculiar spy comedy was great, as he enjoyed his departure from playing stoic roles.
Henry Cavill Is Loving His Departure From Stoic Characters
Joining Matthew Vaughn on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Henry Cavill commended Vaughn, as he allowed Cavill to play characters, something that wasn’t the case for his previous roles. The MOS Star stressed that while a lot of people in the past only wanted to be a certain thing, especially stoic, this wasn’t the case in Argylle, as Vaughn gave him the freedom to be a bit more loose.
“One of the great things is Matthew allows me to be characters, which a lot of people don’t… they want me to be a certain thing. And so, I’m really enjoying acting more now, being a bit more loose and enjoying playing something… left of stoic.”
Although Cavill didn’t directly mention the projects he was implying, it’s reasonable to assume it had to do with the two characters that he was known for best, Superman and Geralt. While having him stoically play Geralt is understandable, pushing Cavill to play a stoic Superman added to the failure of the DCEU, as it was a far cry from the definitive version of the character. So it’s reasonable to see why Cavill might’ve not been a fan of playing a stoic Man of Steel, especially considering he is the beacon of hope and not a brooding figure like Batman.
Matthew Vaughn Would Love to Bring back Henry Cavill as Superman in a Possible Red Son Adaptation
It’s safe to assume Argylle isn’t going to be the last Matthew Vaughn and Henry Cavill together, as the duo have showcased interest in continuing their working relationship, especially Vaughn. The director expressed that he’d really love to adapt the Superman: Red Son storyline from the comics with Henry Cavill if ever given the chance. Speaking on the Post Credit Podcast, he said,
“I thought Red Son was one of the cleverest comics I’d ever read, and the current world we’re living in, it’s certainly become a lot more relevant because ignorance causes more issues, and I think the more we learn about Russia and the Russian history…Wow, could you imagine remaking Red Son with Henry Cavill? That would be an interesting movie…”
While it’s currently a distant dream as DCU is heading towards its new chapter under James Gunn, with multiverse being a thing, one can be hopeful about seeing this further down the line.
Argylle is currently running in theatres.
