The third season of Euphoria has been in limbo ever since the sophomore installment finished its run in February 2022. Created by Sam Levinson, the provocative and edgy teen drama has received critical acclaim. However, it was recently reported that production on the much-awaited third season had once again been postponed.
According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, the latest delay is reportedly because of Tom Holland’s fourth outing in the Spider-Man franchise, which also features Euphoria star Zendaya in a major role. As a result, it seems production on Euphoria has once again shifted to make room for Spider-Man 4 on Zendaya’s schedule, and here is everything you need to know in that regard.
Jeff Sneider Reveals Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4 is Responsible For Euphoria Season 3 Getting Delayed
In February 2022, HBO officially renewed Euphoria for a third season. Production was expected to commence in 2024, but in March 2024, it was reported that filming for season 3 had been postponed. No particular reason was shared by HBO at the time of the delay’s announcement.
According to a new report from insider Jeff Sneider, the production for Euphoria season 3 was delayed partially because of Zendaya’s involvement in Spider-Man 4, starring Tom Holland. Zendaya, who plays the lead role of Ruby “Rue” Bennett in Euphoria and also serves as an executive producer is expected to film Spider-Man 4 next.
Sneider’s report claims that Spider-Man 4 was expected to start filming sometime in September or October 2024, with Justin Lin eyed as director. Thus, Euphoria season 3 presumably had to be postponed further. At the same time, Sneider added that the third season’s production delays were also because of script-related changes.
Script Changes Are Reportedly Also to Blame For Euphoria Season 3 Delay
Euphoria season 3 previously faced a major setback due to the Hollywood workers’ strikes in 2023. However, production was once again delayed in March 2024, with a statement by HBO given to Deadline confirming that the network was committed to making more episodes but was allowing the show’s cast to work on other projects in the interim.
According to a report from The Wrap, script, and story changes are also primarily the reason behind the delays faced by the Emmy Award-winning show’s third installment. A source close to the show’s production told the publication that the third season will feature a time jump, which will significantly age the characters.
At the same time, the source revealed series creator and head writer Sam Levinson was being given more time to crack the story and finalize the scripts for the third season in this new format. Therefore, the production delays were partially also because of script issues, as the process of changing the show’s formula was taking longer than expected.
In his aforementioned report, Sneider also addressed the show’s rumored time jump and stated that the writing delays were a result of this new approach. The insider also expected the deaths of actor Angus Cloud and executive producer Kevin Turen to affect the narrative direction and production of the third installment.
Euphoria is streaming on Max.
