It’s been over 14 years since inFAMOUS launched on the PlayStation 3. In the wake of The Last of Us Part II, rumored to get remastered for the PS5, fans are reminded of the open-world action-adventure game by Sucker Punch Productions. The studio is known today for 2020’s Ghost of Tsushima, a critically acclaimed massive open-world game set during the Japan-Mongol invasions.

Sucker Punch dipped its toes into the open-world genre first with inFAMOUS. Looking back, this is a PlayStation first-party studio game that deserves a remake or remaster for not only its age but also how far open-world games have come since 2009.

inFAMOUS: Back Then Versus Today

Sucker Punch Productions previously worked on Sly Cooper, a stealth 3D platformer starring a talking raccoon. Transitioning from the PS2 to the PS3, the studio decided to go in a new direction and introduce gamers to a brand new IP. inFAMOUS is the project Sucker Punch decided to work on. It’s the studio’s first open-world game, as it takes place in this superhero-inspired world.

inFAMOUS is for sure a product of its time. Most elements of the gameplay stand out, but not in a good way. Climbing up buildings is clunky and doesn’t feel like the best thing to do. Melee combat is straight-up bad and isn’t a viable option to defeat enemies. Lastly, the cutscenes and how the game looks graphically are poor.

Not to say the original game is bad because the franchise is successful enough to spawn multiple sequels. The gameplay is still very enjoyable, and the story ending will still blow new players’ minds today.

inFAMOUS 2 manages to improve almost everything listed above. By introducing the Amp, melee combat is more robust. Climbing buildings and traveling the world feel more natural. The sequel introduced motion capture, allowing the cutscene and story to breathe more life.

Sucker Punch Productions has come a long way from developing 1999’s Rocket: Robot on Wheels to today’s Ghost of Tsushima. inFAMOUS is Sucker Punch’s stepping stone to creating the fantastic Japan open-world game, but that doesn’t mean it should be forgotten in time.

Why inFAMOUS Needs a Remake

If you’ve played the original game, you’ll likely agree with the critiques made earlier. From climbing buildings to beating up enemies, the gameplay is rough around the edges for today’s standards in gaming. The improvements seen in inFAMOUS 2 are amazing and very welcoming, even for 2011. However, with what we know about open-world games today and how they can be implemented into inFAMOUS, a remake would be amazing.

Improving elements of the gameplay, like melee combat, to make it as good as inFAMOUS 2. Visually enhancing the original game to make it the best in the franchise with ray tracing and 60fps gameplay.

Even though PlayStation continues to remaster and remake new games like The Last of Us, inFAMOUS deserves another chance in the spotlight. Bringing new and old players into the franchise, the superhero-inspired open-world game would be a PlayStation hit if remade correctly.

Another reason to remake inFAMOUS is to have it available on modern consoles. Most of the franchise is trapped on PlayStation 3 hardware aside from PS4’s Second Son and its prequel, inFAMOUS First Light.

inFAMOUS is playable on PS4 and PS5 through PlayStation Plus Premium’s classic catalog, but it’s streaming. Fans should have an easier and more accessible way to play inFAMOUS on modern consoles that doesn’t require a premium subscription and a good internet connection to stream it.

inFAMOUS could greatly benefit from the remake treatment.

If PlayStation is willing to remaster or remake games from a few years ago, why can’t it do the same for games over ten years old? Sucker Punch’s title is the prime example where a remake is needed to not only polish up its flaws in the gameplay and visuals but also introduce it to new audiences.

Who would take this massive remake project is a mystery, as Sucker Punch Productions is likely working on its next project, Ghost of Tsushima 2.

With everything we know in 2023 for open-world games, a remake would deliver an experience that’s ten times better. This potential remake could spell a revival for one of the many dormant PlayStation franchises.
